Apologies to folks who've already seen this...

From the EXOTICA LIST via Nicola Battista <djbatman@olografix.org>:

    PIERO UMILIANI DIES

Sorry for being so late with these sad news, but I was away from the
pc and couldn't send email for a couple days. Sunday morning I was
informed by Roberto Zamori that Piero Umiliani passed away a few days
ago. Apparently, his family kept the sad news secret for a few days,
and he was buried last saturday.

Umiliani was the guy behind countless incredible Italian
lounge/exotic/psycho-beat tracks, and of course the world famous
"Mah'na Mah'na" theme (also heard in the Muppet Show and the Benny
    Hill Show).

Recently, after having been almost forgotten for decades, he was
enjoying a new moment of fame due to the reissue/remixes (especially
under the Right Tempo label) of his classic works. Last year one of
his tracks was sampled on the latest album of UK big beat group
    Bentley Rhythm Ace.

I have also heard that some of his friends including Zamori and
Alessandro Alessandroni are planning to do something to remember him,
maybe a performance of Mah'na Mah'na during an Alessandroni concert.
I think Piero would appreciate the idea.

    Nicola (Dj Batman) Battista
