Having only been on this list for about two weeks, but having been a fan and
collector of "acid jazz" for years now -- I find all of this quite
refreshing. I don't know that many people who even have any concept of what
acid jazz is, and certainly few of the record or CD stores I have ever been
in have even heard of the term.
I was hanging out with Incognito about eight years ago, and they used the
term acid jazz to describe their music. I thought it was a joke, and argued
with Bluey that the term "acid" should not be applied to their funky, jazzy,
and positive groove due to its negative and harsh implications.
The thing I like about this vast genre is that it is too flipping big to
encompass in one category. The best acid jazz belies any attempt at
classification, because it incorporates and extends beyond a variety of
forms, genres, and musical expressions. When someone ask me what the bottom
line is, or a simple definition of aj. . .I merely say, whatever grooves you
-- I think it needs to have improvisational elements, and a groove of some
sort. It is an expression of soul, a yearning for freedom, and a melding of
cultures. That is what jazz is. . .so why can't it all just be jazz?
By the way -- another topic:
I too disagree with the trading and such -- but what do you do if you simply
cannot find music available?
For instance, I have been seeking a CD by a group called Jazz Posse -- the
title of which is "Blue" -- for about three years now. It went out of print
and I cannot find it anywhere. I've ordered it from Amazon.com UK, as well
as independent distributors all over the place. Only to be told that it is
no longer available.
So. . .if anyone knows where I can find Jazz Posse's "Blue" CD, please let me
know offlist at JSFact@aol.com. I heard it one night in a club and have been
seeking it ever since.
