They did... Burns' documentaries tend toward blanket generalizations and
over-simplifications (Armstrong and Ellington worship this time, Lee and
Grant worship in his Civil War film, etc...), but that's sort of par for the
course when one undertakes such ambitious projects. Jazz is quite an
enormous subject to tackle all at once. The fact is you could do a 10 hour
documentary on Ragtime alone and still have to leave out a lot of valuable
stuff. I'm just trying to enjoy it for what it is: a giant, flawed, loving,
undertaking (and better than anything else on television).
