Now that I've sorted through the 100 plus posts piled up in the inbox
I gotta weigh in with Steve on this one.
I'm no fan of Wynton
and I do wish he wouldn't talk so much (let the clips run).
But I'm just drinking this series in.
I've seen and read much of the content already but its delightful to have it
all laid up
with artful rostrum fades and sepia tints.
Its a subjective history.
History is subject to people's biases and opinions.
And it just so happens that my humble opinion largely coincides with Mr.
Marsalis.
Did I say that out loud?
By and large they lost me after Bird, Trane and Chet.
Hard bop leaves me cold.
Its elitist intellectual conceit.
I've spent many years mining prewar swing, post war R&B, bossa, etc. for my
soul nourishment.
Its not until jazz met hip hop (acid jazz) that I perked up and began listening
to
contemporary music again.
It seems to me that often when something really new comes along
it suffocates that which proceeds it.
(i.e.: Charlie Parker, Elvis, Beatles, Hendrix, Punk, Shoenberg, Jackson
Pollack)
Call me a philistine
but I'm entitled to my opinion.
I'll take the Duke and Lady Day thank you.
