last night i played a track off the new album "reservoir fish" from the post junk trio and it is a worthwhile effort for any music lover who has their feet in the funk and their souls in modern music. The track i played, Giovanni's Room, is drawn from the great American author James Baldwin, a worthy inspirational source if there ever was one. personally i love the idea of spoken word over funky sounds and this one does that well. the album has some great tracks drawn from a variety of musical sources, hip-hop, acid jazz, funk and more. the leader of the band Frank Swart has played with a veritable constellation of great musicians including Mark Sandman from Morphine and some of the tracks have a sort of Morphine feel to them. the drummer, Ian Herman, is a truly great technician who is able to lock very tightly into a groove and keep things synched in and funky. his resume reads as though he has played with many of the great players of modern African music and that's because he has played with so many of them. Get yourself a copy of this album, it's available from frank who can be contacted via funkwrench@yahoo.com and give it a whirl, it's a worthwhile effort even if the tracks are kinda short, i like those longer more drawn-out things but it's good. this band is connected to the Venusians another Bay area band that has it's chops together and that also has an album out that is worth hearing!
