1/. "Sundays" vol. 01 - Nude/Upstairs Recordings/ K7
I have never heard of the artists on this comp. but that does not stop it from being, in my opinion, one of the best downtempo albums that I have heard in some time and I can't recommend it highly enough! Whoever E.D. Swankz, Telefuzz, Gavin Froome and The Verbrilli Sound are, they make some lovely statements on this disc. E.D. Swankz has two versions of the track "Into The Sake" on the album, one reworked by Hidden Agenda and the original version and both are zippers. "Cansada" by the Verbrilli Sound is a great piece that sets out in a very Latin vein replete with lilting vocal and then segues into other musical notions. For those of you who swim in the tempo of the down, this is an absolute MUST!
2/. Riton - "beats du jour" - Grand Central Records
New on Grand Central Records is an album called "beats du jour" from Riton and it is artfully decorated with some very tasty and very funky music. In a journey into a rhythmic area that blossoms out of the hotbed of hip-hop triangulations, there is some great stuff here and it also gets the nod from me!
3/. Samba Soul 70!-Compilation on Ziriguiboom/Crammed
So you say you wish you could hear some Samba sounds with a little more oomph than is usually deployed around the genre? Seek no more, here is a disc for you! The album starts with a kick from Erlon Chaves and it includes many other artists that are more widely known like Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Bebeto along with a string of folks I have not heard of. Not being a true Samba aficionado, my knowledge of the individual artists is somewhat limited but my love of the form is not and this album appeals to me on many levels for the influences of the many other musical forms that are evident on the disc.
4/. FunkRock complied by DJ Spinna&Monty Burn - BBE
"Rock Breaks and Guitars For Funky People" indeed! This is definitely one eclectic collection. It hotfoots it through tha funk starting off with Sly & The Family Stone doing "Trip To Your Heart" and then running the gamut! There are pieces from Devadip Carlos Santana, Betty Carter, Head Hunters, Can, Brian Auger (twice, once with Julie Driscoll!), Ruth Copeland, Steve Winwood, Buddy Miles and even a track from Colosseum. Certainly not the typical selections but a musical excursion through some unusual quarters. For students and devotees of Funk like me, a treat!
5/. Racoon - Universal Vibes & Remixes - Deep Touch
A new name to me but a really nice find of a group of musicians who, I am positive, will be making some splendid music in the future! "Beautiful Smile" feat the voice of Christine Lucas has a nice stringy arrangement over some funky, rolling rhythms and the lush voice of Ms. Lucas and it is the track that makes me eager to hear more from Racoon. "Cette Ile" feat Nancy Danino is another track that does it for me.
