There's a lot of territory to cover. Arguably, some of hip hop's best lyricism comes from the era of the "fat gold chains", but there was an equal amount of crap along with the jewels.

Are you talking current stuff, or going as far back as any given year? Not sure what you've been exposed to in terms of hip hop. For starters:

Lateef & Lyrics Born-Latryx The Album
    Blackalicious-Nia
    Jurassic 5-Quality Control
    Common Sense-Resurrection
    Common-Like Water For Chocolate
    The Roots-Do You Want More?!!!?!?!
    The Roots-Things Fall Apart

I don't have anything by him yet, but a friend of mine has a radio show in Hawai'i and plays him quite a bit. His name is Mike Ladd, and he's been on a number of compilations so do a few searches and you'll sure to find them, or the full album he also has out.
