    Cuki chart, playlists, news!
    08.07.01 Week 25

31'C, very, very hot! Well it is if you come from wet
& windy London! We're in Stockholm, Sweden.
Some would say the loveliest girls on the planet
live here! Cuki not gonna argue with that! One of
the most soulful of cities too!
Who is Jill Scott? Well, they know who she is!
So you know now that Cuki in seventh heaven!
Ouch! No chance to chill my boots here then!

Massive thanks to Mad Mats and the very soulful
Stockholm crews for one great weekend. Mad Mats
as you know, one of the most respected DJ's on the
European circuit and running one of the most
influential and progressive club nights in 'Raw Fusion'.
Not one piece of vinyl getting past this man! He knew
everything in Cuki's box! Only a few 'hush hush' CD's
to make him scratch his goatee! Mind you, he had a
few of his own too! Music is the policy at the 'Raw
Fusion' night. Well, if it was 31'C outside, it must have
been plus 40'C in the Mosebacke club where they
hold this great night! You know it's hot when you see
pools of sweat on the record you are just about to
launch! Scary moments thinking will the needle get
through the puddle of water from your brow! And what
about the punters! Well, they danced their boots off,
and they must have been even hotter! A loyal and
dedicated crowd who follow the 'Raw Fusion' club
night. They now how to party. A big shout out to
Aaron Phiri, 'Raw Fusion' MC and one of the
    reasons this night rocks!
Many thanks to the other crews in Stockholm and
around! To one very sincere and genuine gentleman
in Magnus Talib, part of the Slippery People crew.
Look out for a new twelve featuring Leroy Burgees
no less on 'Rip a Dip' records, track titled 'Sweet
thing'. You know these guys have got soul when
they pull Leroy out of a ten year retirement. Mr
Burgess still sounding sweet! One sweet thing too
just happened to be Magnus's girlfriend Johanna
Olofsson who I had meet last winter in Helsinki. We
know Johanna from a couple of quality columns
for the 'Chaser' mag and some soulful DJ-ing abroad.
Couple of quality shops in this wonderful city that we
have to mention. 'Snickars' records, many thanks
to Mika and the other guy who I reckon was his big
brother! To another shop that I think is called
'Andreasskivor'. Is that someone's name? Good
shops nether the less and an indication of how soulful
    Stockholm is.
Magnus Zingmark, one of the 'Koop' crew in attendance
too. Look out for the awesome Koop album to finally
get released later in the year! This album will turn
some heads! Heads being turned already by the very
talented and very young 'Swell Session' from
Gothenburg. Getting there funky boots down to
Stockholm for the weekend! Respect to Andreas and
Christoffer from the crew. Look out for a new twelve
on Hollow records very soon and do check out a
killa track for 'Out patients' Vol 2 out now on Hospital
records. I have some CD's of a mix by young Andreas
who will becoming to London to DJ at 'Bite your Granny'
and 'Off-Centre' later in the month. Londoners, feel free
to get back to me for a copy! I'm sure we could find a
couple more gigs for the Swell Session while they're
    in town.
Love to Mats beautiful girlfriend, to Annika and to Jo on
the plane home! Cool when BA cabin crew recognises
you from clubland! I promise to send some CD's Jo.
And ta for the extra portions! :)

Shout out to Claus Mitterhueme aka BTO Spider.
Check out 'High Spirits' every Tuesday night 22.00 - 24.00
on the FM4 radio station outta Vienna. http://fm4.orf.at/
House and soulful grooves of all origins. Check out the
new BTO Spider twelve too on the Spinning Wheel
    imprint outta Germany.

Many thanks to Matt from XL for the package. Send me
that list bro and I'll do you a CD. Ta to Joanne for the
tee's, gonna send you some CD's too.

This week's chart is not dedicated to Sol Campbell!
The most idiotic man in football! What a numbty head!

    #### #### This weeks chart (* New Entry) #### ####

    1. New Sector Movements - Download This (Virgin) 3xLP
The vinyl album arrives! All the music IG has ever listened
to comes through on this extraordinary piece of work. Album
of the year already. 12 tracks, stunning, breathtaking, Nothing
you have ever heard before sounds like this. In the shops!

    2. Osunalde - Paradigm (Soul Jazz) 2xLP
This years hottest house producer getting 8 delicious tracks
down for London's very own 'Soul Jazz' posse! Excellent
album, and those who have been diggin the 'Yoruba' imprint
    know the score already.

3*. Star Company - Down with this vibe (?) 12"
Gotcha! Been bugging for this for sometime and ta to Mad Mats
for the reminder! No info on the white label but one gorgeous
slice of r&b with enough grooviness to work the dance floor.

    4*. Cuica/S.Serritella - Percusiive One/Move this time (Arison) 12"
Pete Herbert and Simone Serritella throw two sides of modern
day London beatness. Petes on a percussive tip hence the title!
Simone getting deep with a more hypnotic and melodic broken
    beater!

    5. V/A - Out Patients Vol 2 (Hospital) 3xLP
Hospital records come with mo goodies in the new instalment
of Out Patients. All new and exclusive and featuring the cream
of today's top production teams. Jazztronik, Swell Session, Les
Gammas, Landslide etc. Even the 'Future Homosapiens'
(remember them) make a long over due visit to our ears!
11 tracks and all pushing the right buttons! In the shops too!

    6. Afronaught - Shapin Fluid (Apollo) 3xLP
Time to put the 'hush hush' CD away cause we got the 11
tracks on vinyl! We've even seen the finished art work and
Orin's looking real dandy as he travels to through space with
his 3000! Containing the awesome 'Transcend me' so you
know what to expect! 21st century music.

    7. Bayaka - Irradiation (Flower) CD
Japanese kings of ambient sonics come with a mind boggler
of a long player. Beautiful selection of acoustic music. Deep,
sensual and very spiritual. Real instruments, tight arrangements,
proper songs and a touch of Japanese quirkiness throw in for
good measure! Is this the music that Nik and Aki do it to?

    8*. Butti 49 - Spiritual Rotation ( ) CD-R
Not the Norwegians again! Yeah, the boys can come
anytime with licks like this. This time, my dear friend
Snorre comes with the super mellow floater. Kick ya boots
off and place them in the refrigerator! Then when totally
chilled, head of to the excellent 'Whiffenpoof' club night.

9*. Kid Sublime - Tea for two/Monty (Zephons Mom) 12"
Ta to JP for the tip off! Monstrous twelve with mo Amsterdam
grooveness! First track Moodymann stylee with the Dutch
touch, second track a top qulaity instrumental hip hopper.

    10. Kaidi Tatham - Betcha (Landslide remix)(Bitasweet) 12"
Kaidi gets the two step maestro remix treatment! Tim Land
aka the Landslide, adding his touch to a west London anthem.
Two adventurous and futuristic producers on the tune!

    11. Mr Hermano - Free as the Sun (Disorient) CD-R & 12"
Gonna be in the box for months this beauty! Ben Mitchell
and Chris Fleming roll on the summer with Nik Weston's
hottest Latin Gospel tip! The album living up to all that has
been heard on the new single. Excellent.

    12. Bilal - Love Poems (Interscope) CD-R
My favourite track from the forthcoming Bilal album outta
Philadelphia. Album now scheduled for July release! Not
bad since it was supposed to be in the stores in January
then March. Bilal as you know featured on the Common
    album. A big talent.

    13*. Imdnon - Detour (Spytech) 12"
Hip hop the way we like it! Sounding like the Natural Resource
crew! Party music and again many thanks to Mats for the
introduction. Weston already with the details and on the case!

14*. Son of Scientist - Ion steel (Main Squeeze) 12"
IG with yet another twisted broken beat outing! This time veering
towards the two step ting without quite getting there. Hitting those
low notes and making those bass bins rumble! Somehow even
    IG makes this musical.

15*. Soul Capsule - Melt Down (Aspect Music) 12"
Have you noticed how many tracks doing the rounds that are
catching the Herbert vibe! Techie house track with enough
quirkiness to keep the jazz fraternity happy! On the floor this
    could be massive!

    16. Trouble Man - The Essence/The Messenger (Far Out) 12"
'Trouble Man' a new disguise for Mark Pritchard. 'The
Essence one of the favourite tracks from a previous Freezone
compilation is coupled with a brand new track for Uncle Joes
'Far Out' label. Funky bizniz always with MP.

    17. Gerarda Frisina - Ad Lib (Schema) 2xLP
What is going on at Schema? As my good friend Speedy is
bangin' on about! Some worthwhile moments to check out on
this album. Touching moments like when you heard what
Speedy's real name is! Personally I think Speedy has shares
in Schema! Did anybody notice how many tracks/artists he
charted! Luv ya boots and luv ya charts Mr Servini.

    18. The Underwolves - 'Mixes' (Compost) 12"
Exciting twelve this, as you get the Fauna Flash 'Timbalas'
mix of 'Shaken' and Switzerland's finest, 'Earthbound' take
on a mid tempo twist of 'Bird Song'. And that's the B-side!
A-side containing 'In the picture' which featured on the last
'Off-Centre' compilation. A new vocal rub on this too.

    19. Fragmentorchestra - EP Section One (Schema) 12"
Speedy was right! It's all gone off at Ishtars joint! Left, right
and centre, Schema ten's, twelve's and albums fall from
the sky's onto my 1200's. One bonkeroony bossa biz
followed by a couple of 'chill ya boots' selections! Man,
you gonna need to chill them too after the A-Side! I had it
pitched down to minus 6 and I still got blisters!

    20. David Axelrod - David Axelrod (Mo Wax) 1xLP
The Axe returns! You know the story! One of the true
heavyweights of club and especially hip hop culture returns
with a long over due album! Some old unearthed diamonds
along with some new and still original sounding compositions.
Excellent sleeve notes from the Shadow too.

21*. Simone Serritella - Here comes the family/Sambalanco (Solaria) 12"
Again we enjoying both sides of yet another SS production
this time on his own imprint. Solaria now up to number 6.

    22*. Sasso - Black Soldier (Switch) 12"
Just the kind of groove for 'Granny' on a Thursday night! Never
getting in your face, never offending, always there just chilling
its boots and enjoying its own groove. Soulful and worth checking.

    23. Three Generations Walking - Slavery Days (Spiritual Life) 12"
SL offer a awesome slice of dub club! Deeper and more
spiritual than anything else about at the mo! Cello's and
violins adding to the haunting narration. Then comes in the
percussion! Oh my god. Nik still not on the bus with this on!

    24. Block 16 - Morning Sun (Nuphonic) 2xLP &12"
New Block 16 album and twelve in the box! Jon Lucien, Jhelisa,
Bim Sherman, Robert Owens all adding their sound to a quality
album. The twelve (Find an Oasis) having some dope remixes
from the Rollercone and Fug crews!

    25. Nepa Allstars - V/T (Surplus) 12"
New label on the Nu jazz tip! Attica Blues boys bringing
this to ya! As always with this crew, futuristic but soulful.
Do check out the excellent 'Blueprint Sessions' at Plastic
People EC2 each and every Friday night.

    26. Nathan Haines - Wonderful things (Chilli Funk) 12"
Third twelve from the amazing 'Sound travels' album and the
A side containing that track along with a new rub! We really into
the B side with an instrumental version of Wonderful things!
Spiritual stuff from Nathan as always.

27*. Two Banks of Four - Last Dance (Attica Blues remix)(Sirkus) 2xLP
Wish the 'Moving' & 'Homegirl' tracks made the vinyl remix album
but we have to make do with another solid Attica Blues rework!
Are these boys the king of the remixes or what!

    28. Truby Trio - High Jazz (K7) 12"
This we think lifted from the forthcoming DJ Kicks series for
the 'on it' K7 label. Rainer and the guys deliver the exclusive
track from their forthcoming musical journey. A slight diversion
from the more percussive trips on Compost. This extremely
    soulful excursion from the boys.

    29. Nitin Sawhney - Sunset (mixes)(V2) 2x12"
Probably one of the first to get the CD-R's of these mixes but
one of the last to receive the promo vinyl! Well, finally got one
and the London Elektricity and KV5 mixes still shake my boots!
MJ Cole and J-Walk adding to the remix package!

    30. Bazille Noir - Mister M (Klein) 12"
Part 4 of the 'Sincerely Yours' series. Ta the crew on
Gumpendorfer Street for thrusting this sweet swinging
soundtrack groove in my hands. Think Mancini,
Morricone, Quincy, Lalo hanging out in the Flex club!
Hold tight for an excellent long player from the boys!
    It's all hush hush!

    #### #### Coffee Compliment #### ####

Its a big loss for the jazz world! Joe Henderson one of the
major players in the world Jazz and one of my favourite
tenor saxophonist died last week. This weeks Java Joint is
dedicated to a man who has given me hours and hours of
musical guidance and pleasure and will no doubt continue
    to for years to come.

    Joe Henderson - Black Narcissus
    (Milestone 9071) 1974
Black Narcissus is up there with Yusef's 'Love theme' or
'Brother John'. It's up there with Miles's 'In a silent way'! Its
a track that brings forward wisdom and truth, beauty and
courage! Big Joe was deep, he was spiritual, he was of a
higher level. He made me think about music in a different light.
I miss him already! It's a shame that in so many of last weeks
obituaries they failed to note the wonderful Milestones years!
All those amazing albums with Dr Patrick Glesson at the
controls. The pre Blue Note and post Verve years were great
years too but the jazz heads within the dance scene hold the
Milestone albums closest to their hearts. This album, this
track for me being the highlight of a memorable career.
