>Erik B and Rakim - Paid in Full
And for harder beats check out "Let the Rhythm Hit Em"
And for the new-old-school tip check out Ugly Duckling, a bit of the
sound of Eric B, but, with the playfulness of De La Soul--quoting
Rakim throughout. Mos Def also quotes extensively from Rakim. And
there's even the recent Rakim cover "Lyric of Fury" that Rage Against
the Machine did, and the tr*p-h*per Tricky also covered during one of
his tours.
Other than UD other left coast sounds are Black Eyed Peas, Jurassic 5
as mentioned, Planet Asia, Rasco, Encore (both from the SF Bay Area),
Styles of Beyond, People Under the Stairs, Swollen Members, Lootpack,
Dilated Peoples, T-Love (now in London), and crews like Pumpkin
Heads, Army of the Pharaohs, Quannum (née Solesides), or DJ crews
like Beat Junkies, Invisible Scratch Pickles (now retired but
regrouped with other SF DJs.)
>EPMD - strictly business
>KRS ONE; this cat is brilliant
>Public Enemy, Paris; on the political tip
>Iced T
From "Rhyme Pays"
"6 in the morning
Police at my door
Fresh Addidas sweakin' 'cross the bathroom floor..."
when everyone still had a sense of humor.
>Run DMC
And Beastie Boys
>Sugarhill Gang
Or Spoony Gee, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five for real old school.
Also for those outside the US, check MC Solaar "Prose Combat" being
his best most jazzy, Suprême NTM "Autentik" for a very original sound
(there more recent stuff is too gangsta deravitive), Menelik (more
like Wyclef Jean) and Sage poêtes de la rue (more like De La or
Tribe.) Or the new UK producers Nextmen, Mark B & Blade, and The
Creators.
Next start listening through the Blue Note, "blue break beats" comps
where you'll find what the above sampled. Also most UK magazines are
a much better source for reviews (aka Jockey Slut, Knowledge, etc.)
