Thanks to all of you have been writing on this topic over the last few days! It has been a highly informative thread and certainly valuable to me at least. Since I know relatively little about hip-hop, I have really found some worthwhile information and I for one am happy to see the list spring to life even if it is not a discussion about acid jazz, strictly speaking.
To my way of thinking, hip-hop embraces one of the strongest rhythmic tides the world of music has ever seen! it is hard to go anywhere these days and not hear something laid over a hip-hop beat. While that does not necessarily make for good music, it has definitely laid the groundwork for some stunning stuff and the hip-hop rhythms have provided the rhythmic backdrop for some wonderful (and innovative!) acid jazz.
Thank you to all of you who have provided lists of your faves, I now have a long listening list since I really do want to learn more about the form. As far as rap is concerned, like any musical form, some of it is excellent and a lot of it is unadulterated crap, there is no way the Puff Daddy is going to convince me musically speaking. There is just so much music to listen to these days in genres that I really love, like acid jazz(!), that I have not really found the incentive to delve into rap that much. I am enjoying learning more about it all though!
For my 2 cents worth, my own personal favorites are:
DJ Spinna
The Mighty Bop
Common
Mos Def
Rae & Christian
Riton
Jigmastas
Capone
Cut Chemist
leslie/The Power of Sound
