yeah that's the question!
For all those who really don't know:
Jazzanova - the true story
Jazzanova are a Berlin based producer collective consisting of the Jazzanova
DJ-team (Jürgen von Knoblauch, Alexander Barck, and Claas Brieler), the
producers Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer and Kosma (Roskow Kretschmann).
Jazzanova had discovered their sonic brotherhood while djing together at
Berlin's Delicious Doughnuts club; they hooked up as a team back in 1995.
To Jazzanova, music means the search for a common language of international
club music, to take in influences from all different cultures and musical
styles, to fuse these styles together and get the audience involved in the
whole musical spectrum of that fusion. Their love for deep jazz and modern
beats has led their music to become a somewhat stunning amalgamation of
retro and new sounds that echoes almost all muscial styles from HipHop or
afrofunk to drum & bass, boogie, brazil, latin, and soul. Always reacting
directly to new and fresh influences, Jazzanova have developed a
percussion-oriented, sophisticated, clean and warm broken-beat-style that is
constantly changing in form and allows no pigeon-holing. It's just simply
jazzanova!
Ever since Gilles Peterson played their first track, "Fedime's Flight" on
his radio show in 1997, Jazzanova have been asked to produce remixes for
many of their idols. They still first and foremost enjoy working on remix
pieces for artists that have especially influenced and inspired them, like
U.F.O., 4 Hero, Incognito, and Azymuth.
In their attempt to pay tribute to the artist they are interpreting,
Jazzanova always try to capture the very essence not only of the particular
track, but of the entire album. As you listen closely to their remixes, you
will often discover elements of the artist's former records and find the
spirit of his entire work reflected. As each Jazzanova remix is produced
with great respect and effort, it is not unusual that it sometimes takes up
to three months of work in the studio before a remix is completed. What they
finally come up with are some excellently produced, very DJ-set oriented
pieces that shift between different styles and tempi, oscillate between
jazzy and electronic feelings and are sure to enjoy dancers and listeners
alike.
The flourishing collaboration between the two German labels Jazzanova
Records and Compost Records began with the EP "Caravelle". Due to their
long-time friendship and their similar opinions on music, the Jazzanovas and
Compost-owner Michael Reinboth decided to team up as a new label in winter
1998. With Michael bringing in his know -how and experience as a label
producer and Jazzanova contributing the music, JCR has set new standards on
club sounds and will guarantee the finest collection of current jazz
impressions flavoured with unique and refreshing vibes and beats.
With the founding of Sonarkollektiv, Jazzanova have set forth their idea of
mutual exchange and networking with other artists - it functions as an
alliance of different Berlin musicians and serves as a "trainee-program" and
door-opener to the world of international club music to many.
Sonarkollektiv is giving musicians, artists and DJ's the possibility to
realise their own ideas without taking care of technical and business
compulsions in the music market - this is the task of Sonar Kollektiv, under
which roof several labels found their home (Airdrops, Dialog, Recreation, No
Zession, Mermaid, Best Seven, Hotdrop Recordings, Aspekte).
