The original source of that soundbyte is an old late night commercial here
in the states. The spot was for a VERY good compilation of old R&B Love
Songs, and has a FUNNY skit in the beginning. There's a few guys and a few
girls at a DEAD party. The girls are just sitting together on the couch.
Suddenly, one of the guys (Th host of the party?) remembers, he just got a
tape he'd ordered in the mail. It's the above- mentioned compilation. He
puts that on, Featuring the Stylistics, the Delphonics, Smokey & the
Miracles "...and many, many more".
Actually, this commercial just started running again recently. It may be
the same compilation, the songs are still great 70's slow jams as we called
them in the part of Venice, California where I grew up. I believe the
original skit ran in the late 80's to early 90's. I don't know how it got
over there, but that's DOPE!
I've got to get my hands on that Central Heating anyway, I love Rae and
Christian's work, having eased into this scene through the side dor marked
Hip Hop myself, starting in about 1981 or so running through the early L.A.
Hip Hop scene. Back when Ice T was still getting on stage at parties in the
Veteran's Auditorium.
Had a funny thing happen lately that made me feel old. I was looking
through a bunch of old magazines. For some reason, I just can't seem to
through anything away. I found an OLD URB Magazine, early 90's. The cover
had a mention of Giant Step moving to L.A. I remembered the seminal NY hot
spot having a party or two in L.A. around the time that our version, BRASS,
was jumping off with DJs, Daz, Orlando and Marques Wyatt. I flipped through
the mag, an early version, huge and made of Newsprint styled paper.
When I found the story on Giant Step... BAM! There was a big, black and
white news pixel photo of... YEP, my little skinny yellow-black arse
dancing in a battle circle, in a woven wool overcoat and a stingy brim hat!
Boy oh boy.
Sorry for the long-winded, self-serving post, but Giant Step in L.A.? ...if
THAT ain't Acid-Jazz, I don't know.
