jeremy,
i think you've covered it pretty well. if you've "mastered djing" (it
scares me to say that) you can usually get through different genre's
and tempo's no prob. you have to have some idea where your going,
musically, if you're going to pack bags to go dj somewhere. alot of
times the best set is the newbies your into, some classics you'll
always be into, some surprises for the crowd, and some random "i don't
know what i'm gonna do with this but it might be fun to slip in
somewhere" track.
you've always got that mix where you go from a thievery corp track into
the breakdoen frwm foghat's slow ride that works evertime...it may be
concidered a routine.
it's hard to say when you dj alot you really know your records and have
alot of room to improvise.
some headliners i know have sets for each tour that have been planned
out track by track. the same order city to city. who's gonna know???
if your the head of your genre you probably play all the newest dopest
cdr's and dubplates...with some forgotten classics.
or if you me you'll play whatever you feel like half entertaining the
crowd and half entertaining yourself.
my advice to beginners is practice alot. watch and listen other dj's.
feel and think about music. aside from practice i'd have to say know
your records. it's fun to throw a track you bought the day of the
event until...
just know your records. don't play anything you don't love. make
mixes to force yourself to do flawless mixes.
i'll get off my high horse now.
