Reviews:
"Brewing a vital concoction of Latin salsa, urban hip-hop and jazz-funk,
Ozomatli formed in Los Angeles in the mid-'90s with a lineup including
Raúl "El Bully" Pacheco, Ulises Bella, Jiro Yamaguchi, Jose "Crunchy"
Espinosa, Cut Chemist, Wil-Dog, William "Echo" Marrufo, Pablo
Castorena, Justin "Niño" Porée, Asdru Sierra and Chali 2na. After
making their name on the local club circuit, the group made an
appearance on the urban late-night talk show Vibe! and released their
self-titled debut in June. Cut Chemist has also recorded as a solo act
for Ubiquity." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
"Ozomatli symbolizes a future direction in music, an interactive direction;
they are the epitome of world music, and yet, they are much more. I am
here to tell you that the future of music is here--personified by Ozomatli.
Their percussion instruments alone are imported from over five countries.
With 13+ band members (depending on which musician friends are in the
audience), expect horns, a scratch-master, guitar, drums, vocals, and of
course--percussion--Ozomatli is a testament to world music!
Ozomatli is interactive and therefore, revolutionary. You have NOT
witnessed a perfomance such as Ozomatli's. Any attempt at description
simply pales, is anorexic--Ozomatli is meant to be witnessed live to
experience the full flavor.
Imagine, if you will...
You and a friend get through the line-i.d.at the-door ritual. You scope out
the scene and try to catch up with the crowd's established buzz. The
bartender updates you: next band in 10 minutes.
You find the smoker's section. You are not disturbed by the blaring
percussion and chants in the background. You assume it's the house
muzak in between bands. You are unaware of the revolution taking
place in the patio outside.
Suddenly, the "muzak" seems to get louder and louder...
As you exhale your last drag, the crowd of people being led inside by a
band of musicians becomes shockingly apparent.
"What the hell..?!" is all you can think of. " - *Alt.ernaZine
