#### #### This weeks chart (* New Entry) #### ####
1. US Collective - Dis is it (SI Projects) 12"
Bugz back at the top! Dirty low down funky grooviness from
Bitasuite! Sampler twelve from the forthcoming 'Please Yo
self' album. US Collective gonna give ya another taste of
multiply talents of the multiply employees of Bitasuite. As
always Daz-I-Kue the knob twiddler! And I bought this too!
2. New Sector Movements - Download This (Virgin) 3xLP
The album in the shops! All the music IG has ever listened
to comes through on this extraordinary piece of work. Album
of the year already. 12 tracks, stunning, breathtaking, Nothing
you have ever heard before sounds like this. Go buy!
3*. Pablo - High Jazz (Red Hook) 12"
Yippee! Paul Hunter goes all Sun Ra! Exactly what the title
says. High forms of jazz music! Taking from the 'Story of
sampling' EP which is very good but you need to turn off the
lights to the high jazz baby!
4. Osunalde - Paradigm (Soul Jazz) 2xLP & 12"
This years hottest house producer getting 8 delicious tracks
down for London's very own 'Soul Jazz' posse! Excellent
album, and those who have been diggin the 'Yoruba' imprint
know the score already. Check a new twelve on Soul Jazz
for the ninth track called 'Deep'!
5*. Deep Expressions - Someday (Phuturistix mix)(Inspirit) CD-R
Straight outta High Wycombe! Probably 710 peeps on
this page not knowing where High Wycombe is! Well,
the Cuki knows cause there's a f**k off hill that he
used to ride his bike up 20 times a week! Err but
what about the music! Much more soothing than the
bike ride I glad to say! Soulful two stepper with quality
female vocal and scats. Rhodes and rhythm's a plenty
too. With the right support this could be big.
6*. Stargazer 2 - Night drive (DIY Diversions) 12"
Christian Zimmerman returns! Remember the 'Diary of
a lost girl'! Well, that bloke returns with some dude
called Dino on a warm and soothing slice of fusion breaks
and beats! Cracking track, awful pressing!
7. Domu - Body Electric (Archive) 12"
Pre album twelve and coming through with bomb after bomb.
The prolific and amazingly talented Dominic Stanton about
to enter the world of the heavyweights. Remember when we
all said who's Domu? Remember that 2000 Black release?
Come a long way in a short period of time.
8. Star Company - Down with this vibe (?) 12"
Gotcha! Been bugging for this for sometime and ta to Mad Mats
for the reminder! No info on the white label but one gorgeous
slice of r&b with enough grooviness to work the dance floor.
Maybe a few copies in Junkies! That's where I got mine!
9*. Champion Soul - Cor Que (Lifeline) CD-R
Ta to Chris Goss for reminding me of this. Sweet
Latin influenced rhythms outta NYC, subtle guitars,
and a fairly big drum bringing Cuki to the carpet in
his own flat. If this was Japanese this would be number
one in Wesser's chart! Ta also to Alex for sending me
this gem.
10*. V/A - State of the Art (Foundation) CD-R
Been getting into this with each play. Land of the rising Honda
so you know its full of Japanese nuggets! This time on the
more experimental tip as opposed to Nik's Latin tinged
beauties. Really into a Fukutomi track called '4 Colored Girls'
and a mad excursion by No Sleep, track called 'Isao Osada'.
All in all it's a interesting compilation for the left of headz with
some unreleasd biz! Ta to Cypren.
11*. Shmoo Crew & Steve Martinez - Hip Hop Hula (G-Force) 12"
Another futuristic nu jazz outing doing the rounds. A drum
pattern that has seen some time elsewhere I believe,
maybe someone can inform me of this. Spiritual flutes,
saxophones and edgy female vocals and piano stabs
adding to the trip! Few bird noises I there too!
12. Cuica/S.Serritella - Percusiive One/Move this time (Arison) 12"
Pete Herbert and Simone Serritella throw two sides of modern
day London beatness. Petes on a percussive tip hence the title!
Simone and Pete together as Cuica getting deep with a more
hypnotic and melodic broken beater! In everyones chart so you
know it makes sense
13. V/A - Out Patients Vol 2 (Hospital) 3xLP
Hospital records come with mo goodies in the new instalment
of Out Patients. All new and exclusive and featuring the cream
of today's top production teams. Jazztronik, Swell Session, Les
Gammas, Landslide etc. Even the 'Future Homosapiens'
(remember them) make a long over due visit to our ears!
11 tracks and all pushing the right buttons! In the shops too!
14. Afronaught - Shapin Fluid (Apollo) 3xLP
Time to put the 'Hush Hush' CD away cause we got the 11
tracks on vinyl! We've got the finished product and Orin's
looking real dandy as he travels to through space with
his MPC! Containing the awesome 'Transcend me' so you
know what to expect! 21st century soul music.
15*. Kyoto Jazz Massive feat Bebel Gilberto - View from her room (Sony) 12"
Only released in Japan as a promo! We've charted and
supported as CD-R, I'm gonna do the same with my vinyl
copy. Think I got another copy coming too! See, its not
only 'Wesser' wit da Japanese nuggets!
16. Butti 49 - Spiritual Rotation (?) CD-R
Not the Norwegians again! Yeah, the boys can come
anytime with licks like this. This time, my dear friend
Snorre comes with the super mellow modality. Kick ya boots
off and place them in the refrigerator! Then when totally
chilled, head of to the excellent 'Whiffenpoof' club night.
17. Space 7 - Space Station (Clairaudience) 12"
Ta to Dego for the tip off! We been checking this on a
'Hush Hush' CD for some time too! Two major rubs,
'Jazz 2000' and the 'Tek no soul 2001' for the west
London crews to dig! Clairaudience delivering quality
via Anthony Nicholson
18. Kaidi Tatham - Betcha (Landslide remix)(Bitasweet) 12"
Kaidi gets the two step maestro remix treatment! Tim Land
aka the Landslide, adding his touch to a west London anthem.
Two adventurous and futuristic producers on the tune!
19. The Underwolves - 'Mixes' (Compost) 12"
Exciting twelve this, as you get the Fauna Flash 'Timbalas'
mix of 'Shaken' and Switzerland's finest, 'Earthbound' take
on a mid tempo twist of 'Bird Song'. And that's the B-side!
A-side containing 'In the picture' which featured on the last
'Off-Centre' compilation. A new vocal rub on this too.
20. Bayaka - Irradiation (Flower) CD
Japanese kings of ambient sonics come with a mind boggler
of a long player. Beautiful selection of acoustic music. Deep,
sensual and very spiritual. Real instruments, tight arrangements,
proper songs and a touch of Japanese quirkiness throw in for
good measure!
21. Kid Sublime - Tea for two/Monty (Zephons Mom) 12"
Ta to JP for the tip off! Monstrous twelve with mo Amsterdam
grooveness! First track Moodymann stylee with the Dutch
touch, second track a top quality instrumental hip hopper.
Even Speedy Servini on to this!
22. Grupo X - Brand new Love (Loft) 12"
Been sleeping on this for a couple of weeks. Good ol'
fashioned acid jazz floater with quality vocal arrangements
and 'feel good' factor thrown in.
23. Llorca - Any How (F Com) 12"
Nik's not happy! He's been after this for weeks and Cuki
finds one lying around in some shop that no one ever visits!
Taken from the forthcoming album for F Communications.
Quality jazzy house with shades of St Germain and Erik
Truffaz, Flip on a pure jazz slide.
24. Bilal - Love Poems (Interscope) CD-R
My favourite track from the forthcoming Bilal album outta
Philadelphia. Album now scheduled for July release! Not
bad since it was supposed to be in the stores in January
then March. Bilal as you know featured on the Common
album. A big talent.
25. Imdnon - Detour (Spytech) 12"
Hip hop the way we like it! Sounding like the Natural Resource
crew! Party music and again many thanks to Mad Mats for the
introduction. Weston already with the details and on the case!
26. Soul Capsule - Melt Down (Aspect Music) 12"
Have you noticed how many tracks doing the rounds that are
catching the Herbert vibe! Techie house track with enough
quirkiness to keep the jazz fraternity happy! On the floor this
could be massive!
27. Nepa Allstars - V/T (Surplus) 12"
New label on the Nu jazz tip! Attica Blues boys bringing
this to ya! As always with this crew, futuristic but soulful.
Do check out the excellent 'Blueprint Sessions' at Plastic
People EC2 each and every Friday night.
28. Trouble Man - The Essence/The Messenger (Far Out) 12"
'Trouble Man' a new disguise for Mark Pritchard. 'The
Essence one of the favourite tracks from a previous Freezone
compilation is coupled with a brand new track for Uncle Joe's
'Far Out' label. Funky bizniz always with MP.
29. Sasso - Black Soldier (Switch) 12"
Just the kind of groove for 'Granny' on a Thursday night! Never
getting in your face, never offending, always there just chilling
its boots and enjoying its own groove. Soulful and worth checking.
30. Nathan Haines - Wonderful things (Chilli Funk) 12"
Third twelve from the amazing 'Sound travels' album and the
A side containing that track along with a new rub! We really into
the B side with an instrumental version of Wonderful things!
Spiritual stuff from Nathan as always. Catch this vibe at 'Bemsha'
every Tuesday at the NHAC.
#### #### Coffee Compliment #### ####
Cal Tjader -Souled Out
Verve (V6-8769) 1968
Been meaning to dig this one out for a while. In fact thought
I lost it! Another soulful excursion by the man, this a period
when he was obviously influenced by the soulful attitude
of mainstream music which was gaining momentum in north
America at the time. Two such compositions being the title
track 'The Prophet' and my favourite track called 'Souled
Out' which is a nice little jazz mambo! Don Sebesky on the
arrangment and conducting. We think the cover looks like
'Sovs' is auditioning for a part in a Shakespeare play!
