How do you define "everyone's" culture? Culture is available for everyone.
Los Angeles is the first modern society that incorporates the various and
cultures and ethnicities of all continents. And other cities have followed
suit. Another thing people fail to understand that this city is still a
young city and was forced to grow up too quickly. In 1900, Los Angeles was
the 34th largest city in the USA. 80 years later, it became the 2nd.
As a native born-and-raised Angeleno, I know exactly what the problem is.
Most of the people who bitch and moan about Los Angeles being a "cultural
wastelend" were lured here under industry-defined images of Hollywood, etc
and when they find out the fantasy does not exactly match the reality, they
go into a hissy fit. And for many, the only way to deal with it is through
geographical, mental and cultural isolation (thus those Westsiders who dare
never to go east of La Brea types (i.e. fuckin idiots)). It's not a totally
white thing, since I do know of quite a few white people who do know what
culture is, but unfortunately they are not in the majority. Of course, as a
non-white (and non-black) minority, the industry and the people who conjure
up and perpetrate the imagery likes to avoid looking at, and listening to
people like me.
