Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #58: Addicted To True Stereo
Newsflash 11.06.2001
Dear friends,
time is simply running out of our hands and many things happen without any warning.
We truly live the last days of music biz, as we know it, so why should anyone be
surprised by us being late with this newsletter again? Yeah it's exams time. And time
to work. And time to produce. And time to spin records all around the region. And
time to take care of foreign musician and dj friends when something happens in our
homebase. And of course no time to sleep, rest, go to the woods or fix a broken
relation.
Not that we are complaining, mind you. We actually enjoy things happening this way...
It all began with a little help from our friend Zeljko, who runs the London based
Cosmic Sounds (http://www.cosmic.sounds.mcmail.com/) label, releasing obscure 60s-70s
jazz from Eastern Europe, as well as new acts from the post-yu region (check out his
latest and absolutely amazing compilation with the matching title "Balkan Express").
As Shuriken had to visit Belgrade for a conference, he contacted Zeljko to give him a
few contacts to people in the local scene who would be interesting to meet. In a few
days Belgradeyard Sound System already organised 2 gigs for Shuriken. On both
occasions he had a chance to jam with the masterminds behind the Coxless Pair project
(http://www.cosmic.sounds.mcmail.com/label/artists/dvojac.htm) Dusan Petrovic (sax.)
& Boris Mladenovic (guitar + sampler).
The Belgradeyard Sound System (www.belgradeyard.co.yu) is a dj duo in Belgrade who do
a show in the famous B92 radio, as well as throwing regular clubnights and parties
with foreign guests (for example Claas & Jürgen of the Jazzanova). They superb djs of
the most uncompromising nature (their motto "Don't give the people what they want,
give them what they need!" describes exactly the way they play: real tough freestyle
from free-jazz to downtempo, hip hop and beyond), so any of you who has been
following/supporting our activity for some reasons, should definitely subscribe to
their newsletter (mail@belgradeyard.co.yu) to get info updates about the Belgrade
scene as well; promote his releases by sending them stuff; etc.
Only a week has passed, and we already had a chance to jam together with Dusan on the
top of Budapest, on an open-air party featuring dZihan & Kamien from Vienna. This
uplifting event was organized by the Jazz Turbulence massive (the mastermind behind
it is dj Suhaid - suhaid@freemail.hu) and we thank for them for one of the greatest
dj-experiences of our lives. You can check out how the city looks from the Citadella
fort on the top of Gellert Hill, where we have seen the sun coming up, while
spinning: http://www.irisz.hu/webcam_hun.html. We suggest you to download fast mo mpg
versions of a day in Budapest: http://www.irisz.hu/webcam_archiv.html. If you also
download dZ&K's mix
(http://tilos.hu/djk/mixek/dzihan_kamien-live_at_jazzturbulence_1_010602.mp3;
http://tilos.hu/djk/mixek/dzihan_kamien-live_at_jazzturbulence_2_010602.mp3), you can
have an impression how that night was.
This week we have found a true gem on the web. Read and then browse:
One day while sitting around in the dorm at college, my roommate and I were
discussing music, and he shook his head and said, "You really don't know what stereo
is, do you?" He pulled out his set of Koss stereophones and plopped them over my ears
and said, "Here, listen to this." On came "Route 66 Theme" by Nelson Riddle in
stereo. I was completely blown away and instantly addicted to true stereo. That
moment was really the start of Both Sides Now. I became a stereo evangelist of sorts,
finding captive audiences in unsuspecting people who visited me, "subjecting" them to
true stereo rock and roll ("Here, listen to this!").
by Mike Callahan of Both Sides Now Publications (http://www.bsnpubs.com)
Check out their incredible jazz-funk-rock label discographies pages to get mad about
the quantities of the black stuff ever pressed. You will cry, boy...
Keep on being stereo evangelists till next week!
