It still amazes me how much of an equalizer the internet is...look at the
various backgrounds and the implied range of ages, races and nationalities
that participate in this list...everything is just reduced to ideas and
words!
I'm also persistantly jealous of those people out there who grew up with
their parent's collection of jazz, funk, rock, etc. I can't belive that
friends of mine listened to Bitches Brew as a kid! You guys out there are
unbelievably lucky, the best records in my parents collection were Willie
Nelson "Red headed Stranger", and sing-a-long with Mitch!
Somehow I discovered heavy metal (Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeath) during
grade school and junior high...at the same time I discovered my brother's
discarded collection of rock tapes...One of the first I remember listening
to had pink floyd/dark side of the moon on one side and rush/farewell to
kings on the other.
Thankfully, community/college radio provided an outlet for emerging indie
rock/hardcore/punk/industrial music during my teenage years.
I too enjoyed the sounds of:
Pixies
Bad Brains
Primus
Dead Kennedy's
Soundgarden
Fishbone
etc
And like most white american suburban kids (W.A.S.K.), it was the sophmoric
Beastie Boys that intially turned me on to Tribe, Pharcyde, Rakim and other
hip-hop greats. Through a series of underground hip-hop parties (which
liberally mixed in Acid jazz DJs) put on by the Flava Pak crew in Kansas
City I was gradually introduced to the other forms of electronic music of
the time. It wasn't long before I heard the polyrythmic madness of early
jungle and felt compelled to buy my first 12" single UK Apachi/ Shy Fx
"Original Nuttah", the rest followed suit.
