Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #49: Introduction of the Incredibly Strange Music
Newsflash 09.03.2001
Dear friends,
Could someone help us finding out more about a jazz saxophonist called Jeff Jones?
This week Shuriken came across a sealed copy of The Spirit of David (his first and
probably only recording from 1976 on his very own People's People Recordings) and it
absolutely blew his mind. In the All About Jazz Online, he is named as one of the
most important saxophonists in the San Francisco Bay Area, but still he has released
only this album. Shuriken has found his e-mail address on the web-site, but
unfortunately it was outdated, so we are afraid that we will never get to know more
about this fantastic guy (check out one of his tunes in the radio mix!).
There are a bunch of other names we couldn't find out more about, like the
psychedelic afro-funk-rock Voodoo Family on the Soukous label from France. Who are
these guys? Anyone who knows the score, shall drop us a few lines...
Big up to the guys who run the Mas-Kep club-nights on Thursdays in the basement of
Faklya Klub, Budapest(http://www.thirdg.org). Shuriken has just played there (teamed
up with Badihali, Sanyi & Leengum). 20, 50, 80 guests, true underground vibe, like
back in 1996. Great thing!
This week's reading is a very sharp insight in the cultural role of us, record
collectors:
"In an age of information overload, the mere act of wading through and deciphering
society's discard becomes a political act. By the process of personal observation as
to what gives them entertainment and pleasure, the collectors subvert the invisible,
tight reins by which society controls us; additionally, they aid us developing our
own aesthetic about pop culture phenomena, When one hears their enthusiasm and their
philosophical justifications, one also hears multiple levels of irony as well as
nostalgic associations. Thus these records become more than a consumeristic product;
they become a reflection of the collector's inner vision and express an alternate
aesthetic philosophy."
by Andrea Juno & V. Vale in the Introduction of the Incredibly Strange Music Vol. 1.
(RE/SEARH PUBLICATIONS, San Francisco 1993.), the most amazing book about record
collecting.
Keep on block rockin till next week!
