I wonder if you'd do better just making her a mixed
cd. I'm not sure that Ken Nordine style word jazz is
necessarily mushy enough...much less soemone like saul
williams and stuff. maybe some of the softer,
trippier stuff that's talked about here, with smooth
transitions would be what you're looking for. I
always wanted to put together a set of song and call
it "the water at night" after my favorite chill-out
spot, with some slow, trippy stuff on it, some cricket
noises, etc. i'd start with mighty bop, a forest
mighty black, visit venus, that kind of stuff, i had a
couple stereolab tracks i'd put on there, stuf from
the Om Lounge comps, stuff from Talvin Singh's Anokha
comp, (she might think the eastern instrumentation is
really groovy... ;), even a cut or 2 from Sylk 130,
    Tortoise, Bjork...

    I don't know, it's tough. I can't really think of
anything like you described that I would feel good
about paying money for...but you might be able to
giver her sounds she didn't expect, but is just as
happy with. oh, you might want to look around for a
show on public radio called "sound and spirit", they
have all kinds of mushy stuff like that plus some
occasionally interested "world" music stuff. I feel
for ya...my mom went apeshit for Enya... =(

I've also heard that if you're seriously meditating,
the tapes that are made for that, like with eastern
bells at particular intervals, don't sound like much
just to play them, but if you actually do it right,
they can help you sink deeper. they're kind of
designed that way, different from other music.
