Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #51: More sweets
Newsflash 23.03.2001
Dear friends,
As you may see from the playlist we are hooked on the new Poets of Rhythm album (on
Ninja Tune/Quannum). Badasss breaks + killer horn-section = head nodding deep funk
with afro flavas. Too bad, we couldn't play the whole album in our show. Chekkit,
this bad mutha is one of the best releases this year. Another killer of the week is
Psyco On Da Bus - pure afrobeat from this very new century (no wonder, it's Tony
Allen behind it again, the living afro beat legend).
We made a terrible mistake in the last newsletter: we haven't mentioned that Anima
Sound System got a Golden Giraffe (Music Award of the Hungarian Record Industry) as
well. We feel that we have to take a high level of responsibility in this case, since
there were recently some international coverings of the Hungarian scene (Straight No
Chaser, ORF) without mentioning them (anyway, thanks to everyone for pointing the
spotlights to Budapest). So those of you who think of our music scene in terms of
current producers (Yonderboi, Gabor Deutsch, Marcel) only: please pay attention to
the eclectic sounds of Anima Sound System as well, for they are the true pioneers of
the Hungarian scene.
They were the first band in Hungary to record an underground electronic album when
the whole Hungarian scene was just starting to develop. Shuriken still has the
memories of a Tilos Radio interview he did with them back in '95 where they were
talking about the hopeless situation in Hungary. Back then Kruder & Dorfmeister
wouldn't have attracted enough people to fill FMK, a small (with 200 people already
overcrowded), but very important club that gave home for this culture in those days.
Since then they have kept it real, recorded several albums (with exponentially
increasing production skills) and have been a close friends and supporters of Tilos
Radio. The members of the band come from several different generations, with diverse
musical interests. Their unique music is true fusion of authentic Hungarian and Roma
folk, jamaican dub, jazz and urban breaks and beats. (Complete discography is
available at the website of the band: http://www.nyugat.hu/anima/disco.htm.) We have
the honour of playing in their hometown Szombathely on 13.04. Their clubnight is
called Sweetbeat, and it's really sweet that they have invited us.
Keyser just have started to collect stuff about copyrights for his diploma, and he
found a gem. It's some thoughts of a rock producer on the music business, with simple
words.
"Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up
thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide
and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit. I
imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances,
at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other
end, holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed.
Nobody can see what's printed on the contract. It's too far away, and besides, the
shit stench is making everybody's eyes water. The lackey shouts to everybody that the
first one to swim the trench gets to sign the contract. Everybody dives in the trench
and they struggle furiously to get to the other end. Two people arrive simultaneously
and begin wrestling furiously, clawing each other and dunking each other under the
shit. Eventually, one of them capitulates, and there's only one contestant left. He
reaches for the pen, but the Lackey says, "Actually, I think you need a little more
development. Swim it again, please. Backstroke."
And he does, of course."
