Speaking of the Sambassim, Rainer Trüby played it during his set last
Thursday at Jello Bar in Montreal. The crowed, though the typically
pretentious and yuppie types the bar usually attracts, really went crazy
when it kicked into the breaks. The set itself was actually very good
(though i expect no less from a DJ of Trüby's calibre.) A live sax player
accompanied Trüby's spinning, which was a brilliant display of fusion--far
more organic and impressive than any other such act I've seen, including St.
Germaine. It's fascinating that something so simple--guy on decks, tenor
sax player soloing with him-- could be so powerful, but it bordered, at
times, on the sublime. It was particularly impressive to see the
saxophonist work with Trüby's 'carajillo' and a batucada remix of sylk 130s
'happiness' that my relatively ignorant ears had never heard before. My
only complaint about Trüby's set was the lack Brazilian and dance floor
jazz. I know Montrealers don't generally go for that sort of thing, but
even so I was hoping to hear more than an unknown version of 'mas que nada'
(albeit brilliant, particularly when the sax player quoted James Moody from
Dizzy's 1967 version--i wish i knew who did the version Truby through down)
and a sweet Brazilian jazz gem. Oh well, still can't complain. Anybody on
the list see his set at Movement in Toronto?
