Actually there's a digital rights management company called Intertrust who
have come up with an idea based on the idea of 'superdistribution' whereby
digital music files can be distributed freely but cannot actually be opened
and listened to unless you have a subscription or want to pay a one-off fee.
This takes advantage of P2P (peer-to-peer eg Napster) but still allows the
artist/label to receive royalties. You can even set rules so that someone
can listen to it for several times and then decide if they wanna pay for it.
This means you could send your mates all these great tunes by email, they
could preview them and if they liked buy 'em.
