This definitely applies not only to DJ's, but to producers as well. I do sample-based music, and while it's fun to put together random noises with obscure beats, you also have to be clever as well. You can cut and paste all you want, make Bert & Ernie funky over your Eddie Bo, but as you made perfectly clear: "learn the records".
