Poet-Musician Scott-Heron Sentenced
Updated: Fri, Nov 02 2:24 PM EST
NEW YORK (AP) - Gil Scott-Heron, a musician, poet and civil-rights activist
of the 1970s, has been sent to prison by a judge who said Scott-Heron had
failed to use several opportunities to kick a destructive drug habit.
State Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman sentenced Scott-Heron, 52, to one
to three years in prison after he showed up in court on Monday, almost a
month after his original Oct. 1 date in her courtroom.
"You've had all these opportunities to help yourself, and you just don't
seem to care," Berkman told the composer of "The Revolution Will Not Be
Televised."
Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney's
office, said prosecutors did not request the prison sentence but neither did
they object when the judge imposed it.
Scott-Heron had been arrested several times on drug charges. His latest case
stemmed from an arrest in November 2000 after police saw him buy a small
packet of cocaine in Harlem.
The musician pleaded guilty to a felony drug possession count in July, but
rather than sentencing him right away, the judge let him remain free so he
could tour Europe with his band during the summer.
Scott-Heron promised that he would enter a residential drug treatment
program upon his return, but he did not keep his word. Prosecutors say that
despite a clear addiction to cocaine, he denies he has a drug problem.
