Music LIVE REVIEW | [Japan] RARE! Monday Michiru 2001 Summer LIVE

                                 Monday Michiru

On July 27th Monday Michiru released her 'Best of' album, 'SELECTIONS
'97-00', featuring her most popular songs of those years. On the same
day she released another 'Best of' album, 'RECOLLECTIONS,' a non-stop
remix by Toshio Matsuura from UFO. The release of these two compilations
comes after her recent marriage and birth of a baby.

Monday Michiru, queen of the club scene, is having her 'golden period'
right now. Her husband is Alexander Sipiagin of the Mingus Big Band. The
two of them live in New York, where they often play at Blue Note. Today,
they had come together and brought the band for a rare performance in
    Tokyo.

The performance was jazz flavoured, with hints of bossa nova and
Brazillian. It wasn't a club atmosphere, it was a chance to simply
listen to the music. Michiru's voice was at once elegant, soft and
gentle, and powerful. She is one of those rare musicians who can hold
her own in two styles - in her case club and jazz. Though many young
women may try to emulate her, they will have their work cut out to reach
such high standards. The band backed her up with a masterly performance
which had the audience warming to them more and more throughout. Between
songs, Michiru kept the audience laughing. In the middle of the show,
she made a double announcement, that she'd had a baby and that it was
the drum's birthday(!), and got everyone to join in a little
celebration. To top off a wonderful and very chilled set, she finished
with an acoustic version of 'You Make Me', and left us to simmer
    pleasantly in the summer heat.

Michiru may have come up with the acid jazz generation that launched the Brand New Heavies, but musically she's left them all behind. Here is a woman who's vocal and songwriting chops are so far above her peers she can't get a record deal in the US. There isn't a singer on either side of the globe that has this much class or natural ability that uses it this beautifully. Brilliant and moving. - [2001] Thom Jurek on Monday Michiru
