Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #71: As long as the rent's paid

    Newsflash 15.11.2001

    Dear friends,

Probably a lot of adventures happened out in the streets of Budapest in the last two
weeks, but I could not tell you a single story as I have been only out on Tuesday
night when I did the radio show. On the other days I sat at home studying from boring
books to my last law exams (for the few who interested: I passed the first one last
week!). So you'd rather read Shuriken's latest newsbits from London:

"As the growing friendly support in the local eclectic scene makes me feel comfortable
and at home in London, only after 6 weeks stay, I can easily get carried away and
forget my studies. Dom Servini (Wah Wah, Mouseorgan, giant pants, big love & respect
for big female bottoms, churchly bachelor living, bad-ass beats) is definitely taking
me on ruff ridez and adventures (after following him like a groupie through 2 gigs a
night I got a chance to hang with him for the longest cab ride in my life to a
Halloween party that was over the top already, Dom's mate Johnny saved my night with
some tea, bananas, crisps and funny cigarettes. God bless him!). Check out Dom's
infamous Wah Wah night with Reini from one of our current favourite labels, Spinning
Wheel of Germany (November 17th @ Catch 22, Kingsland Road, Old St.).

The Pranksters did show me much love as well as I played the hardest possible set I
could @ they monthly night @ Cargo, last Thursday. As this night is developing into a
kinda informal meeting place for a lot of djs, producers in the scene, where you can
always meet new guys, have a good laugh together and pick up the latest white labels
(big up Felix and Simbad for hitting me with the good stuff), check out the other djs'
late afternoon requisitions in neat plastic bags, etc., I strongly advice it to all
the true heads out there for a great time, nu talents (this night dj Taek Won from
Unspoken Heard + Delta T live), no hype. My greatest pleasure was to freak all the
other djs out with Marcel's Nujazzkilla, a classic in K&S sets already, still
unreleased. This mad tune created some debates among my dj colleagues about who takes
the CD-R home (just as if it was a hot girlie!).

Thanks 2 Simon @ Nuphonic, Chris & Tony @ Fluid Ounce for sorting me out with proper
beats for this really important gig. Thanks for Iain @ Grand Central for sparing me a
lot of terrible queuing in the cold night this Saturday, putting me on the list for
the Riton + Fingating live (the most intense live gig I've seen in the last months),
Mark Rae gig @ Cargo. It was nice to see Brighton's finest (the Tru Thoughts massive -
Mark B, Quantic, Unit, Bonobo, Rob Luis, Roo) djing at Club 93 East as well. Thanks
for the headbanging beats Rob, they finally hit my mailbox this morning."

That was the report of da killa Shuriken. And now some more words from London, a bit
more disappointed ones. Sometimes we feel quite the same way, although I would not
    compare myself to these heroes.

"Speaking from more than a decade of experiences and frustrations, an exasperated Dego
says, "I think we're all just going to disappear soon and that's it. We'll never
really have been noticed and we'll get found out about in ten, 15 years time. You can
fight so much, to a point where if you can't get through, then you go and do something
else. I think, unfortunately, unless something dramatic happens, that's how it's gonna
be. I haven't got much faith in people's tastes. There's an old saying in football:
'There's no room for skill in this game' but what's the most beautiful thing about
football is having skill. I'm seeing that happen in music now."

I.G. has the last word. "We're creating ourselves and we're just trying to go along
with it and see where it takes us. It's not something you sit down, talk about and
plan, you just let it happen. As long as the rent's paid, we'll keep it going."

Taken from "Broken Beats of the Underground - Days of Future Past" by Denise Benson.

Anyway, I would add one more thing: as long as there is one single person who is
enjoying what we do, we'll keep it going, too.

Keep it going till next time!
