A few new items worth mentioned this week, so off we go:
From Warp comes a remix of Two Lone Swordsmen's "Tiny Reminders"
album, entitled "Further Reminders," that adds bulk to the previous
release, as well as some aggressive minimalism. Actor, director and
(now) musician, Vincent Gallo, wrote, produced and performed "When" -
a low-fi collection of guitar ballads and instrumentals that are dark
and bleak, much like the characters he portrays on screen. Oddly
compelling. Finally, Brothomstates' "Claro" supplies your minimum
daily requirement of glitchy techno, complete with unpronounceable
song titles. All kidding aside, there's some nice textural stuff
going on here that's well worth checking out.
A tip of the chapeau to Mole for two new offerings: "Slapstick" by
Nor Elle (aka Terry Lee Brown Jr.) is a deep, dubby, downtempo disc
that boasts of its tempos residing completely below 90 BPM. Warning:
do not drink coffee, Red Bull or ingest any other stimulant before
checking this puppy out. On the other hand, Geb El's "From A Distant
Point of View" is a high-energy reinterpretation of his album that
came out a little over a year ago and includes four new tracks as an
added bonus.
"People Make The World Go Round 3" contains some mad broken beat
business from the usual suspects: Nathan Haines, the Bugz In The
Attic crew, Phil Asher and others. Speaking of BITA, "IG Culture
Presents Inspirations" compiles 14 tracks from the '70s and '80s that
we can only assume left an indelible mark on IG's psyche. Trouble
Funk, Players Association, Oneness of Juju and Freddie McGregor all
make appearances here, resulting in an enjoyable blast from the past.
Earlier this year, DJ Smash compiled a nice mix for Blue Note Records
that brought together jazz, funk and hip-hop from the catalog, along
with some new collaborations. Now he's put together his own album for
Instinct that draws heavily from much of the same vibe, the result
being a smooth, jazzy groove from start to finish. Nice. There's also
some nice jazzy sounds inna-Latin stylee from Batidos - a pairing of
Jay Rodriguez and Ron Trent on the Six Degrees label. "Olajope" is a
'milkshake' of Afro-Caribbean music, filtered through house and R&B,
creating a sensual and creamy concoction that goes down easy. Best of
all, it's fat free!
Finally, if I can make it to Dirk's office before we pass each other
on the Bay Bridge like ships in the night, there will undoubtedly be
a few goodies from Compost and Klein to share with you as
well.....wish me luck.
Ciao for now,
David
