Strictly speaking, 'Deep House' is the name give to classic house from
Chicago and New York in the same vein as Frankie Knuckles' 1987 LP 'Deep
House' from which the name originates. Though I am undoubtedly venturing
into highly controversial waters, I will venture to say that currently, deep
house has meaning mostly as a counterpoint to more aggressive house
sub-genres like hard house. As a name referring to a stand-alone genre, I
therefore find 'Deep House' quite meaningless. In Montreal, for example,
calling music 'deep house' is generally an appeal to an upmarket, older
clientele, who see it as the cool soundtrack to their drinking and cruising.
This version of 'deep house' entails saccharine melodies, insipid beats, and
mercilessly stupid vocals. More soulful, complex house is called garage
house (although often without appreciation for the name's roots and what,
strictly speaking, garage entails) or afro-latin house. Relative to hard
house, which is almost all you can hear in MTL, these sounds are all 'deep'
and would therefore be considered 'deep house' by most, but are very
different and reveal the ambiguity of genres names.
I'll genre examples to others more qualified.
