The State of Things?

So, what gives? This year has been a real downer for
the group of artists I have considered to be reliable.

I just picked up the new Jamiroquai. So, it's just Jay
Kay sans band now? If so, what a shame. Perhaps his
ego exploded. They were tight-knit as a group, with
    incredible musicianship and great songwriting
(although with some pretty flighty lyrics). I thought
the sound and quality was dropping off somewhat on
Synkronized, but it seems to have dropped dead on
Odyssey. Sounds pretty generic if you ask me. It's a
sad thing when the very thing that brought success
(the band as a whole), gets dumped in favor of
individual pride). Can you imagine the Solsonics or
Brand New Heavies back in the day without the musical
element? Sure, sampling and canned beats are great,
but nothing compares to the live band sound. Go see a
live hip-hop band other than the Roots and you'll get
    the point.

Other major disappointments this year include Sade
(huge letdown after the wait) and Erykah Badu (sloppy
    effort).

If it weren't for some amazing newer artists such as
Zero 7 and Nikka Costa, I'd just be listening to Roy
Ayers and the Roots all day (which isn't a bad thing
    at all!).
