I totally agree with you on Badu. I know lots of people who don't like the
disc, but to me it is more thematic than her first and much more removed
from hip-hop. It has classic blues, gospel, R&B, and is rich with
storytelling and emotion. I always enjoy artists who take a long time to
craft a release. For some it works wonders, and for others, like
D'Angelo...I dunno. I think she was overshadowed by the debut of Jill Scott
this time around though. People started making comparisons. People always
want to compare these "neo-soul" artists, and it really ticks me off. You
don't compare D'Angelo to Bilal or Musiq Soulchild. Why are they throwing
Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, India Arie, et. al. all into the same
pot. There are similarities, true, and it is a refreshing respite from most
else that is in R&B, but I think it's like comparing Miles to Coltrane. You
just don't do it. Different instruments.
do you compare Aretha to Roberta Flack? Hell nah!
Some folks are singers. Some folks are writers/lyricists. Some folks are
good producers. Some folks are good musicians. etc. etc. etc.
Just my $0.02.
