A couple more additions, black women artists from the 70's:
Wanda Robinso - I have "A Possibility (Back Home)", on the compilation "The
Doors of Perception", she talks over a very funky little tune; from the
sleeve notes she did a few albums on Perception: "Black Ivory", and "Me and
a Friend", which are collected together as a compilation on cd "The Soul
Jazz Poetry of Wanda Robinson".
Nikki Giovanni, again I know of her via a compilation: "Stand Up and Be
Counted 2", on Harmless. This includes her "Great Pax Whitey", which starts
with a choir singing"Peace be Still", then moves to Giovanni's righteous
poetry. Giovanni also appers on the track "Ego Trip" on Backalicious' NIA
lp.
I think these 2 women must be up there as influences on people like Ursula
Rucker...
There's also Camille Yarborough, but I'm not personally familiar with her
work... apart from "Take Yo' Praise", as sampled by fatboy Slim
The Harmless comp. is also worthwhile listening to for spoken word tracks
from Gary Byrd ("Are You Really Ready for Black Power"), and The Watts
Prophets("Dem Niggers Ain't Playing"). The liner notes, as always with
Harmless releases, are excellent.
