So many treats in store for tonight, it seems like Halloween has
already arrived. Here a sampling:
Albums:
Monolake: "Cinemascope" - minimalist and glitchy: not as
crackle-ridden as Pole, but more of an intimation, a suggestion, a
whisper - dancing in your head.
Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble: S/T - take original drum patterns by
Tony Allen and let folks like Cinematic Orchestra, The Troublemakers,
Boozoo Bajou and Kirk Degiorgio create a new context for them and you
wind up with an Afrobeat hybrid that goes way beyond anything that's
come before.
V/A: "Soul Of Science 2" - more Digiorgio who, with Ian O'Brien act
as curators for this compilation of offbeat jazz and electronica from
both the past, present and future....Dick Hyman next to Kaidi Tatham,
next to Arif Mardin, next to Silver Apples.....you get the idea.
Kelis: "Wanderland" - I've been dying to drop "Little Suzie" since I
heard Gilles P. play it months ago. The album's about to hit the
streets in the coming weeks, but we have it now.
V/A: "Arctic Circles 3" - The Beatservice label comes correct with 15
downtempo gems from established and emerging Norwegian acts. Stellar
stuff from Royksopp, Athome Project, Flunk, Mind Over Midi and others.
Universal Funk: "One" - Jazz & soul from Denmark that's
thought-provoking, danceable & cool.
Tweaker: "The Attraction To All Things Uncertain" - former Nine Inch
Nailer Chris Vrenna runs the music gamut from real quiet to very loud
and much in between, along with collaborators David Sylvian, Will
Oldham and others. Tres interesting.
Layfayette Afro-Rock Band: "Darkest Light: The Best Of..." - This
American funk band left for Paris in the '70s and became enamored by
African rhythms. You've heard them sampled on records by Public
Enemy, Janet Jackson & Wreckx 'N' Effect. This is the real deal.
If you'd like to have your music considered for inclusion on
"FreeFall," please send CDs or vinyl to:
111 Laidley St.
San Francisco, CA 94131
To those of you already sending stuff this way - thanks for all your support.
Until next week, ciao for now!
David
