Music ARTIST PROFILE | [Japan] Mondo Grosso: Osawa Shinichi, the 1Man
    Behind MondoG

         Mondo Grosso (Shinichi Osawa)

Born in 1967, Shinichi Osawa began recording in the late '80s.
Since then, he has created or produced
much of Japan's most innovative pop, acid Jazz, dance, and
electronica, and along the way, has
profoundly effected modern Japanese popular music. He is
    commonly credited with spearheading
              Japan's current R&B boom.

In 1989, Osawa formed the band Mondo Grosso, just as Japanese
    groups such as Yellow Magic
Orchestra and Towa Tei began to receive international
recognition. Following the release of the
group's successful self-titled debut album in 1993, Mondo
Grosso went on to complete a world tour,
with gigs in Germany, France, London, and New York.
Eventually, the group as such disbanded, the
band's moniker "Mondo Grosso" becoming one of founder Shinichi
    Osawa's many creative/recording
personas. Since becoming the group's sole member, Osawa has
    released four original albums, several
re-mix projects, and countless hit singles as Mondo Grosso. In
1997 Mondo Grosso signed with Sony
Music, simultaneously becoming a Sony artist and producer.

Shinichi Osawa's work has been instrumental in shaping the
    perception of Japanese pop/electronic
music outside of Japan. Along with DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso is
one of the most recognized Japanese
Composers-DJs the world over. Far from being limited by
    culture and borders, Osawa's cosmopolitan
music celebrates diversity while seamlessly blending elements
from pop, R&B, rock, blues, jazz, and
folk. Nor is he impeded by language -- Osawa is as comfortable
    creating pieces in Portuguese and
English as in his native Japanese. Osawa has worked with an
eclectic range of musicians to create his
unique recordings including Chara, UA, N'Dea Davenport (Brand
New Heavies), queen of Brazilian jazz
Tania Maria, former Groove Theory member Amel Larrieux, and
Portuguese rapper Lino Crizz (to name
a few) -- making him a true international phenomenon.

His latest work, MG4 features fashionable, down-tempo stylings
of Jazz, R&B, string ensemble, Samba,
and Bossa Nova fitted comfortably into the framework of
two-step and hip-hop. Visuals for the album
were created by the London design team Alias?X well known for
    their house of PRADA advertisement
campaigns. Created organically with live instruments (acoustic
guitar, stand-up bass, piano, etc.), MG4
reminds us of some of dance music's greatest moments (The
Loft, the Paradise Garage, Brazil 66),
while fully and boldly embracing the future of urban music.
