Well, this has been the busiest week in record buying I've done in a
long time.
Here's the results:
Alexkid- Bienvenida 12" on (F.Com/ France)
Damn, this is a hot lil' 3 tracker. The A side "Bienvenida" is a dope
afo/latin house workout. Perfect. Then the 2nd tune on side B
"Strawberry Lane" is a spacey broken beat thing with deep tones
(detroit-ish). Also a deep & mellow downtempo thing on it called "Not
Every Angel". Bellisima!!!!
Loqate- Miracles (Recloose/ Afronaught mixes)
(Ubiquity)
This is some deep & mellow broken beat- house bizness. Very nice for the
afterhours sets. Recloose brings his Detroit sound to my happy ears.:)
Knu Je'- Seeds of Life (Dennis Ferrer mixes) (Distant Music)
This is such a beautiful deep afro house tune. Originally, by Jon Cutler
& DH Brandon, but Dennis Ferrer lays his magic touch on this deep
soulful tune. The percussion, bassline, trumpet, and vocals are all
intertwined like rainforest vines, that sends chills up my spine.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Wagon Cookin'- Mar/ Mare' (Appetizers)
These guys are doing some mucho caliente' gorgeous samba house &
cti/kudos flavored jazz/funky house at it's best. These guys need to
churn out a full LP real fast,. I'll buy it, play it, and blabb it all
over the net. :) The talk of the acid jazz list. I just have to find
their Odori releases.
Osunlade- The Deep 12" (Soul Jazz)
I know some of you already have found this early in the game, but I just
got it this week.
"The Deep" is a minimal and hypnotizing afro house track with
mesmerizing, almost blueslike Harmonica by Jimmy Clissett. Only a one
sided 12", but worth the bucks for this hard to find record.
Dennis Ferrer- Funu (Basic/France)
This 12" is rock solid gold!!!! Afro house at it's complete best. It's
like Fela Kuti & Manu Dibango jammin' with Osunlade. The lyrics are
righteous and tell a story about a young man's strength, honour, and
pride. The beats are nice and funky, the bassline will have the
dancefloor bump'n' & grindin', and the guitars are pure afro funk!!!!!
Dennis Ferrer is one of my favorite producers for this genre along with
Osunlade, Ron Trent, and Chateau Flight.
Shantel- 12" (Essay/ K7)
Germany's Stephan Hantel & marcus Darius brings us 4 diverse cuts of
afro techno, funky dubby house, 2-step, and latin bizness on this smart
lil' 12". These guys are my kind of producers, they do all types of good
music!!!!!
Also got older records that rock:
P'Taah- Flying High/ Inception 12" (Ubiquity)
P'Taah- Compressed light 12" (Ubiquity)
Both early US broken beat records by genius producer Chris Brann.
Rachid- Pride (Universal)
Originally, it came out in "98 to probably no praise or recognition.
But, this is a hidden treasure for it's prototype- 2-step mix by Dobie.
He uses the same break Roni Size used for a New Forms tune, but at 128
bpm. If you pitch it up a lil' it works well with Landslide, MJ Cole,
Bump & Flex, Sunship, etc. I wonder if early UK Garage dj's were playin'
this one, probably not. The Mindsweve remix is wa weird electro soul
kinda thing, but the Mood ll Swing mix is US Garage at it's weakest. Buy
it in your discount bins, for the Dobie mix, and neo- classic soul
original.
Goldie- Believe 12" (MJ Cole/ Bump & Flex mixes) (Swing City Renegade)
These were never properly released until 3 1/2 years later. But well
worth the wait. MJ Cole delivers a nice & jazzy 2-step into 4/4 Sincere-
type mix. Then an old skool dub mix. The Bump & Flex mixes gives us a
club smash 2-stepper, and '97-'98 4/4 mix, that I still dig alot. Diane
Charlemagne sounds hauntingly beautiful (ooops I used that twice, doh1),
as she did on "Inner City Life". Why not a 2-step bootleg of that
one????
That's all 4 NOW, Folks!!!!!!!!
