    SWELL CHART SEPTEMBER 01

Compiled by Andreas Saag aka Swell Session

    ARTIST TITLE LABEL

    1. Jimpster - Deep Down - (Kudos)
Lovely! Still listening to this one all the time. It just gets better and
    better...
Very deep and very soulful. Make sure you'll have it too.
    Big shouts to the Jimpster!

    2. V/A - State of the Art - Japan - (Foundation)
DJ Mochizuki has compiled 12 tracks of pure japanese nu school jazz frenzy,
letting us understand that there is a lot more to japanese electronic jazz
culture than the happy latin stuff! Starting out with Bayaka's beautiful
combination of ambient piano patterns and a high energy beat, via the arty
string arrangments of Combo Piano, to a section of five or six songs that
really shows the dark dub atmosphere of japanese nu jazz stuff that you too
seldom get to hear. For example: the Steve Reich minimalism of Juzu,
Saidrum's electroica excursions, and Mick's echoing dub landscapes. And then
suddently returning to something we recognize: A mid tempo spoken word
piece by Yukihiro Fukotomi. A by all means diverse compilation.... go seek!

    3. 4 Hero - Les Fleur - (Talkin Loud)
Nobody could take better care of Minnie Ripertons classic than 4 Hero.
Keeping the retro feel, focusing on the fantastic melody...

    4. Briskey -Lovlier Without Makeup/Conchita's Cabin - (Downshall Plastics)
Smooth sparkling latin grooves and a beautiful choice of mellow vocals.
Conchita's Cabin is a really good example of a song you like playing out and
most likeley will listen to again when you get home...

    5. At Jazz - Lab funk - (Mantis)
A great album, showing all of the diverse skills of the duo from middle
    England.

    6. Buscemi - Tres Lounge Remixes - (Downshall Plastics)
Buscemi is a very good remixer, so what would be a better idea than to put
three of his best on an EP?

    7. Erro - Don't Change - (Yoruba)
Such a lovley mix of acoustic guitars a sparse 4/4 beat and vocals with a
    lot of soul. Hit music!

    8. Jol - N/A - CD-R
My favourite downtempo album by far... My Gothenburg friend Jol invites to
a journey with 11 chapters, carefully narrated, still every single track a
    possible
first 12". What label this is going to come out on is yet to be
    discovered...
be sure not to miss it when it happens!

    9. Arvid/Eerik - Plej 01 - (Plej)
Brothers Arvid and Eerik give us two tracks each on transparent vinyl.
Atmospheric, dubby, deep, housey... and beautiful. Arvids Evum features the
soulful trumpet skills of Stefan Sporsén and the chords in Eerik's
Exformation is so complex and tasteful you won't believe he's only 18 years
old! Dr Rockit has got soulmates in Gothenburg...

    10. James Hardaway - Straight From The Fridge - (Hydrogen Dukebox)
A lot of different styles on this album, every other track an ambient bridge
to the next song. It's nice to hear both sparse jazz house and classic
slamming drum n bass (MC included) on the same album!

    11. Alison David - On Last Look - Domu remixes - (Bitasweet)
Domu is defenatley going to be one of the big boys of nu-jazz! I love it
when he shows us his most electronic and drum n bass flavoured skills The
dark remix on this 12 is massive! Do look out for
    the coming album on Archive!

    12. 4Hero - Album Sampler - (Talking Loud)
There is surley an amazing album coming up and this apetizer should prove
it. Another Day features Jill Scott and she really is the right woman to
submit the feeling of morning boredom in a cool urban environment :-).
Anyway, I can't stop listening to this... ("gotta gotta gotta get up...")

    13. Metro Area - #3 (Environ)
Three very good tracks indeed, "Caught up" taking the concept to the max:
Tight 4/4 beats, 80's electro bass and a lot of atmospheric soul/jazz
    elements
on top of it. When that bass synth hits you the first time in a club...
    Ouch!

    14. Intuit - A New Beginning - (Compost)
Brazilified music is usually at its best not being too cheesy, keeping a
mellow vibe. Intuit boys Till Maragnoli and Thomas Braun seem to have the
same opinion. The tracks Weva and O'Perguicoso makes this 12 stay in the
    box!

    15. Bugge Wesseltoft - Moving - (Jazzland)
The Norwegian innovator's conception of jazz is still moody, acoustic and
    sparse.
    And it's still amazingly beautiful.

    16. Espen Horne - Nhu begin'n - (Out Patients 2 sampler on Hospital)
As far as I know you can't find this anywhere else than on the OP2 sampler.
But it's worth looking for. Pure Norwegian vintage jazz mania! Beautiful
vocals, and skilled musicans at the piano and percussion. Keep your eyes
open in the second hand shops!

    17. Hefner - Level green - (Inertia)
Hefner knows how to write music that is not just tracks but songs. Level
Green is defenatly an example of this. Once again perfect vocals by Josée
Hurlock, and they get a possibly even more intresting treatment in the
mellow, almost singer/songwriter sounding Blue States remix .

    18. Los Ladrones - Montana Rusa - (Earth Project)
A bunch of old guys and an Irish singer playing nu school bossa? Yes indeed,
and what a band this is! The singer sounds like she was born and raised
anywhere in latin america and the live feel and grooves are really swell...
Big shouts to the boys at earth project for giving away their last copy of
the unmastered CD-R to me at Grannys!

    19. Fini Dolo - Heartbeat - (People)
Both a broken beat and a 4/4 version are included on this 12 and the spoken
word intro is fantastic! Lot's of live feel to it and very, very dancable!

    20. Victor Malloy - The Musings of monsieur Malloy - (inertia)
If Hefner is the moody, romantic prodigy of the Inertia family, Victor
Malloy is his even moodier and more psychadelic brother. (Yet as talanted,
of course). This album is a perfect soundrack for a rainy evening at home
(drinking cranberry juice strictly recommended). Lots of nice jazz samples
and downtempo breakbeats thats makes you sway back and forth in your sofa.

    21. GK Deep - Shots in a second - People
I know 20 tracks probably is a more appropiate number of tracks fo a
chart... but then I would not get to chart this one. Groovy west london
buisness with a lot of live feel it is, anyway. And the track Morning In
The Dark is a very nice triplet groove that really sounds like someone dug
it out of some collection of good rare vintage experimental funk. This is
made year 2001 though. Thank you for making it!

The Swell Chart is back, it features twice as many tracks and it's..........
    a little late :-)

I'm coming to London the 19th of October to DJ at the first Hospital records
residency at Herbal. If any more gigs turn up I'll send a note...
My friend and Cukipapa Alan Brown is also playing there and im very glad
that I'm soon going to meet him again. I love your boots Alan!

The new Swell Session 12" test press has arrived to gothenburg and it sounds
really good! It will probably be out at the end of October (on Hollow,
distributed by Goya). It includes the tracks I See Through You and Gone. A
beautiful Jimpster remix of Gone is also included. Big shouts to Jamie and
the rest of the Freerange boys! Last week I finished and sent my first two
tracks that will appear on my first release for Freerange. It's an
electronic balad (yes) and a more uptempo house track.

I also had a photo session for the cover art of my release on the swedish
techno label SLS. The photos turned out vintage blue note style which I
really like as a contrast to all the anal anonymous techno releases out
there. The music is organic and roots music flavoured techno, and the
    release is distributed by Prime.
The 12 also features label manager Samuel L Session. Big shouts to you
Samuel for inviting me to your birthday dinner!

I'm soon going to finish my friend Jonatan's second track for his first 12"
as Ernesto's on Hollow (He's the guy scatting on my Speak track). The first
Ernestos track turned out very well and features a soul intro, a vocoder
lead, broken beats and a 80's synth outro. Swell.
