Eeek,
Since I've just returned from a gig and I'm feeling the need to get
into a prone position, this will be brief.
Laurie Anderson gave a most enjoyable and intimate performance last
week and included a number of past "hits" mixed in and around tracks
from "Life On A String" that comprised the bulk of the show. The
following night, both Ursula Rucker and Matthew Herbert were
outstanding in their own unique ways. Rucker evoked the beat poets of
the '60s with her poignant and political lyricism, while Herbert
demonstrated how to juxtapose technology with soul. Dani Siciliano
totally charmed the crowd with her ebullience and airy vocalizations
and Phil Parnell turned out lush chords and intricate piano solos
that had the crowd screaming for more. Don't miss them if they come
your way.
In the box: New albums from Herbie Hancock ("Future 2 Future"):
Herbie makes a good downtempo album with a smattering of drum 'n'
bass and some lovely traditional jazz...."Pole R" the fourth album
from these minimalist glitch-meisters.....Taxi: "Blue Zero One" - I
meant to pick this up long ago, but better late than never.....great
melodic downtempo with superb vocals...Fela Kuti: "The '69 Los
Angeles Sessions" - pre-dating Fela's seminal work of the seventies,
the longest track of this ten-song collection is under nine minutes
(!).....David Bowie: "All Saints" - originally created as a Christmas
gift for family and friends, this collection focuses exclusively on
Bowie's instrumental compositions from "Heroes," "Low," "Buddha Of
Suburbia" and tosses in a few rare ones too......on the 12" front is
atmospheric drum 'n' bass from Blu Mar Ten and "Sometimes" from
Demusphere - a nice slice of broken beats with the abstract jazz of
"Interplanetary" on the flip.
Now I'm really sleepy....
Ciao for now,
David
