In the box for tonight's program: Leftfield electronica and bleepy
beats from King Of Woolworths - an unusual choice of a pseudonym
adopted by Manchester's Jon Brooks.....lots of synth and sample
action here - much of it in minor keys.....spooky. There's also lots
o' pretty-sounding stuff to balance it out: Victor Davies' debut
album is a departure for the Jazzanova-Compost label, due to the
predominance of acoustic guitar, gentle bossa beats and (gasp!)
vocals....."Love's Arrival" from legendary Chicago producer Larry
Heard is a low-key affair that's perfect for that late-night chill,
or a romantic make-out session.....Aqua Bassino scores extra points
for their name, but it's the lush, jazzy house that's the real
winner....hailing from Italy, brothers Enzo & Gianni Lo Greco have
also been creating some fine nu-jazz/bossa beats as Soulstance for
several years and finally get a proper U.S. release with "Truth,
Simplicity & Love," a compilation of their first two albums for the
Irma label. There's the latest in the Hi-Fidelity Lounge series from
the good folks at Guidance. As of this writing, I haven't listened to
"Volume 3: Cosmopolitan Grooves" yet, but judging by the list of
participating artists, it should prove to be another winner. Last but
not least, is "Gigi" from Ejigayeho "Gigi" Shibabaw - a lovely
vocalist who fronted the awesome Tabla Beat Science show here several
weeks ago. Produced by Bill Laswell, featured musicians include Wayne
Shorter, Karsh Kale, Herbie Hancock, Nicky Skopelitis and others.
Albums I'm still loving a lot: Herbie Hancock's "Future 2 Future,"
"Melody A.M" from Norway's Royksopp and Omni Trio's "Even Angels Cast
Shadows."
That's it for this week - ciao for now!
David
