some comments on _godspeed you black emperor_ concert in toronto...
what i witnessed was the first attempt to musically/artistically capture
the WTC and everything around it
with images of flocks of birds, buildings, winter, planes, NYC,
industrial wasteland, projected behind them all playing very melancholy
yet redemptive music
with only one word clearly stated: "hope"
the only comparison i can come up with is "alabama" by coltrane and to
steal leroi jones's words on alabama
"..what we're given is a slow delicate introspective sadness, almost
hopelessness, except for Elvin [Jones, drums], rising in the background
like something out of nature ...a fattening thunder, storm clouds or
jungle war clouds. The whole is a frightening emotional portrait of
some place, in these musicians' feelings."
did anyone else see the show [or is going to see the show]? because i
don't think they prepared everything in the last few weeks? or was i
just primed to interpret the show along these themes?
has anyone else seen a show in a similar vein in their perspective
cities to compare? if so i'd like to know about them...
[is this OT or right on topic?]
