One of the things I miss the most about my days back in Indiana was record
shopping at thrift stores, garage sales, and the like. My favorite routine
was going to the library sale at the Monroe County Public Library. I
bought heaps of jazz vynil for 25 cents a piece --Herbie Mann, Dave
Holland, Shirley Scott, etc.-- and also some awesome CDs for one dollar a
piece (plus some very cheap mathematical books for a dollar or less). I
have gone to a lot of 'vintage' shops as well, but I do not like
them because everything is sorted out. It takes the fun away of crate
    digging.
Now that I am back in Mexico city, there is not a similar record
hunting tradition as in the US, so there are practically no used vynil
stores in the city, and the few ones downtown mostly sell 70s classic rock
albums. 'Rock Shop' just closed its doors a couple of weeks ago or so.
There are not thrift stores either, so everything is bought in the mexican
equivalent of carboot sales. My favorite 'chucherias' marquet is the
Portales one, where long lines of stacked vynil records stand fifty cents
or a dollar a piece. They are mostly 80s pop acts, but you can also find
some really good disco singles and jazz albums. Not only did I find that
famous 'Stereophonic Sound Spectacular' demo album there for 25 cents, but
also early 80s hip hop singles from acts like Funkapolitan and Spoonin'G.
It is also great for spoken word records and strange things, like a
vynil recording of a 'quinceanos' birthday party, with family interviews,
    the father's toast, etc.
