Last week, the third annual 'Tecnogeist' festival kicked off in Mexico
City. In case you do not know, Tecnogeist is a Mexican/European cultural
event that brings together DJs and electronic musicans from both sides of
the Atlantic ocean. This year it was supposed to include a first week of
more chilled an leftfield grooves, and a second week of harder sounds to
culminate in a Mexican edition of the legendary Love Parade through the
main avenues of downtown Mexico City and finishing at the country's main
square. However, the local government decided to withdraw the permit for
this year, despite the overwhelming success and popular support
from previous years.
The series of events started with a pre-inauguration party, hosted
by PARADOR ANALOGO at downtown cantina (and bullfighting museum) 'La
Faena' where Nortec's PANOPTICA stole the night with his abstract beats
and noises. I strongly recommend his debut album on Certificate 18.
3Qwarks, from ECLECTICA collective, started things early on with a house
set of original material which ranged from the deep and soulful house to
colder techno-house. Too diverse to keep the people dancing. The same
should be said about the rest of the DJs, whose names I do not remember
but who failed to keep the vibe going and had a hard time pleasing the
eclectic crowd for the night.
Two 'openning' concerts were scheedulled for Friday and Saturday
at the Sor Juana University's campus, but the university also withdrew
itself a few hours before the show, so they had to move them to the much
smaller Goethe Cultural Center. I missed Friday's show, where Buscemi was
to play, but I could not miss Kruder and Dorfmeister on Saturday. It might
come as no surprise that their set was awesome and eclectic. Starting with
their own remix of 'Bug Powder Dust', they moved from dub to electro into
house and hip-hop. The crowd was 'moving' but not really dancing, exscited
but confused at the same time. Drunk and stoned. Kruder and Dorfmeister
showe dup in matching 'mariachi' attire: jackets, vest and ties. This made
Peter Kruder look like 'El Zorro' and Dorfmeister like, well, a middle
European dressed like a mariachi!
Before K+D, local DJ Smoke played some darkstep which pleased
nobody, despite Go-Go and Luca's MCing. Even before that, Tosca performed
three new pieces I had never heard, with live African chants. I do not
know what happenned before, because it was a nightmare to get in the
place. It took me an hour to make it pass the main gate (even though I
arrived to the place at around 9pm), but as I looked on, people started
cluttering around the small gate (remember, this was not a normal venue,
but a small cultural center) making it impossible for anybody to get in.
Some tried jumping the fence, only to be dragged outside by security. In
general, I must say the organizers really made th best of the situation
and left everybody disappointed only by the government and the Sor Juana
University officials.
