Cuki's hottest chart of the year so far, check it below
But as ever we start off with a tale or two
Maybe even a tale or three!
Firstly we begin with a big thank you as always to a fine host and promoter in Chris Murr. The good Dr of Zürs always putting on the very best parties and in the ritziest of places. And believe me, Zürs is ritzy! I was the only one wearing Evisu's? And you can't drive into Zurs with any old Ford or Opel mate! They won't allow it, they only allow BMW's and Merc's baby. Cuki as always prefers his train journeys.
Well, we miss the 11.45 Friday night train to Langem/St Anton by two minutes (too busy chatting up the girls at Nik's and Levi's birthday party!) and we have to catch the 5.04 the very next morning. The name of this train was called 'Ars Electronica'! See, Austrians do have a sense of humour even though they speak German! Anyway, I gotta play a few records on a mountain in Lech to a bunch of snowboarders at midday! These snowboarders are I'm sure trying to kill themselves in he finest possible style. They just want some nice music as a final finale to their leaving of this planet. Personally speaking, ten rounds with Mike Tyson looked more inviting then what these guys and girls were doing with their planks of wood in all that snow. I loved the tricks and the airborne acrobatics show but the crashing looked pretty painful.
Then the following Monday at the 'Bedding' party at the Hotel Edelweiss (yes, they really had beds in this party), Cuki playing his favourite records of late at this lovely little venue situated in the basement of the hotel. Easter weekend so plenty of the finest chocolate in circulation at the good Dr's place. The good Dr's place full of interesting peeps too. Many thanks to Beatrice and Sandra from Zurich, to Werner, Klaus, Stefan, who 'kinda' don't have girlfriends at the mo, to Dorit and Johannes for the chocolate pressies and all their company over the Easter period. Big hugs to DJ Hopfi and to Samy too. We finish these things as always with a 'we luv ya 'snow' boots Chris'.
The very next weekend and another train journey! This one is called 'Johann Strauss' (Does he play for Rapid Vienna?) This train we manage to catch! 10 seconds before the door closes but I'm on it. A bit wet but I'm on it! Is it me or do all DJ's feel the need to leave their departures to the very last moment! Anyway, a five hour journey to Nürnberg in Bavaria and to the home of Stereo Deluxe records. Now Stereo Deluxe is not one of your typical labels from the leftside. They are one of the most organised, and respected labels in Europe, apart from never missing trains or getting wet, they always manage to keep the headz happy with their diversity and still find time to knock out the many worthy and delightful compilations for the other lot. Them being the HMV, Virgin and Tower brigade/buyers etc. Many a time I have heard a great selection of music in a bar or cafe and upon my asking about the compilation, finding out yet again that Oli Roesch the man behind Stereo Deluxe is the man behind the comp. Home also to artists such as the Funky Lowlives, Jaffa, Bobby Hughes Combination, Boozoo Bajou, Trio Electrico, Strike boys etc. Check the http://www.stereodeluxe.com website. Yep Stereo Deluxe has a strong rosta of artists representing true diversity and individuality. Call it home for modern urban sound and music. Stereo deluxe goes further then that though. In house distribution, Elizabeth the girlfriend of Oli, she does the art work and a dedicated army of 5 others who help make the label tick. They even have their own club
So off the train Cuki gets. I meet Oli at a cafe in the hotel that I am staying at. This is not your normal hotel, this is one straight out of a Jim Jarmush movie. It has a history, this though a mystery to the Cuki. I look around the corridors of this hotel for Elvis Presley in Adidas sneakers, if he is alive then he has to be in this hotel. It was weird man. Stranger things though would happen later this weekend. The hotel also hosts the Wax bar which is famous for the covers of those Future Lounge compilations. I walk around the hotel room in my new Stereo Deluxe slippers which have been kindly donated to me by the man. Yeah, forget the Tosca/G Stone bathrobe, Cuki got SD slippers
Everybody else walks around in Puma and Adidas of course. It's home of the two sportswear giants.
Oli picks me up later in the evening and takes me to the best Italian restaurant in town. No famous sausages then for the Cuki! We eat only the very best gnocchi and pasta at this joint. We are joined at the table by Oli's long term and beautiful girlfriend Elizabeth(my tongue fell in the gnocchi when she sat down next to me. Didn't need a fork, just used my new and extended tongue). Elizabeth is a graphic designer by trade but I can tell you she also has the very best taste in music as the CD player in her Mazda convertible expressed. (I need to know the title of that Swedish comp in your player sweetie!) We finally make it to the club. The Stereo Deluxe club is owned and run by the Oli and the crew. It's not a club night, it is actually their own space and building. Built up over a period of a few years and full of warmth and cosiness that you would expect from the SD crew. Yet another place where Cuki would take a girlie on their first date! Anyway, Cuki gets to play his records and has a good time and we all go home happy.
Next day that man Andrew Jervis from Ubiquity records in San Francisco http://www.ubiquityrecords.com/asp/home.asp is playing at the same club. Cuki decides to hang around for another day. Me and Oli spend this day catching up on the footie results. Both our beloved teams, Nurnberg and Spurs lose miserably and we decide that the best way to get over this is to have a jolly good time at the club in the evening. Cuki warms up for Andrew, playing choice choons from his 'hush hush' collection. Yes, you'll be glad to hear that the 'hush hush' collection is finally getting back to some kind of normality after the theft in London a few weeks back. Mr Jervis then takes turn to show off a few exclusives. Do get ready for the excellent 'Rewind' comp soon come on Ubiquity, the other Ubiquity stuff is just to hot to mention. Your PC will probably catch fire!
It's at this time that Cuki decides to practise all that international playboy jazz DJ Eivind Olsvik (Moosjuus/ HiFi Terapi) taught him in his teachings in Oslo. Cuki finds himself a lovely girl by the name of Gigi and parks his butt by her butt (lovely butt too). Meanwhile Andrew is dropping bomb after bomb (musical bombs that is). Cuki in seventh heaven, choons choice by the bucket load and the most interesting girlie in Bavaria by my side. If only Spurs would have held out for a draw?
Time too go home then. Oli and Treacle have other ideas though! Treacle, oops, forget to tell you about Treacle didn't I. Well some English girl who lives in Nurnberg. Didn't actually catch her real name, I started calling her Treacle after she called me 'Doll'. Some girl from East Sussex apparently, actually from Tunbridge Wells with is in Kent but Kent of course is only one step up the ladder from Essex and just a short step at that. This the reason she uses East Sussex we think! I actually miss them Essex type girlies, we haven't really got a equivalent here in Vienna. Anyway Cuki going right off the track here. Where were we! Oh yes, Oli and Treacle take me to a Greek restaurant, Its 5 in the morning and we reckon we haven't had enough alcohol yet! Football, football football, that's are excuse for the overload of alcohol anyway. After getting kicked out of the restaurant (only because it closed at 7am) we venture back to Cuki's hotel in seek of Elvis and his Adidas sneakers. We reckon Elvis would have worn old school vintage stylee like the ones on http://www.garmentdistrict.com/store/shoes/adidas/adidas.htm No such luck so we decide that a croissant and a coffee at the train station would be our next adventure and port of call. Who knows, maybe Elvis is about to catch the 7.55 to Frankfurt! Treacle by this time is off her rocker. Oli is losing his sanity and Cuki didn't even have any to begin with. Andrew Jervis on the other hand, he's clued up and retired to his room long before all of this. The sky is blue, the birds are singing, trams full of people, er maybe it is time to go to bed Oli. We sleep for a wholesome two hours so we can wish wellness to Mr Jervis before he leaves for Cologne. Cuki too has to depart soon. He has arranged to catch up with the Munich crews. He does though have to give much love and respect to all in Nurnberg. To Treacle, to Elizabeth and all at Stereo Deluxe HQ, To Gigi (see you in Africa/Vienna/wherever?). To Andrew Jervis and finally to the main man in Nurnberg, Oli. We luv ya carpet slippers and your boots bro.
Munchen is only just a short train journey from Nurnberg. So short, I didn't catch the name of the train I was travelling on. Probably called Franz Beckenbauer or something! Dr Boots arrives in Munich and is to be picked up by the Off-track man himself Dirk Rumpf. Before he arrives though, Cuki has a wander around the city and guess what? They have a street called Nymphenburger Strasse. It was at this time that I stopped looking for Elvis and started looking for Nik Weston! Then I realized that Nippon Nik actually has a new Japanese girlie and that he is probably getting plenty and wouldn't be here on the prowl here in Germany! Dirk soon arrives and man does he have a sexy car or what! Old school Volvo 121. No heated seats on this baby, this is vintage Daddy O stuff. We ride like kings to Dirks pad. Dirk is one of my favourite DJ's from the younger generation (not the hip hop outfit the younger generation) it's just that Dirk is in his early 20's. Tonight me and the boy wonder will play a fine selection of music at this little establishment in town. Supper is taken a Dirks local diner and we take our favourite tunes of the last few weeks to the bar and let ripe to any one who cares to listen. Another late night arrives before Cuki hits the pillow. Cuki feeling a bit of flu coming on at this time, he secretly blames Oli and Treacle for the breakdown of his immune system.
Next day, Dirk takes Cuki to all the worthwhile places in town. Those places of course Compost records, the 'Into somethin' and 'Optima' record shops. First up Compost records. One of the main flag bearers of the nu jazz, phuture funk thing. I'm sure they need no introduction from me. You lot will know all about Compost and the awesome selection of music, artists, compilations that make their way out of Haager St. Check the website for all the latest at http://www.compost-records.com/ Hold ya boots down too for the Jazzanova album and the forthcoming twelve's. They really are worth the wait. Nice to also catch up with Kaisa, Tom, Lea and Michael. Respect from Dr Boots.
Next stop and 'Into Somethin' records. Another quality record shop and respect this time to Theo who was holding it down in the shop. Check http://www.intosomethin.com/ for the latest happening and runnings. 'Into somethin' is more then just a quality record shop too. It is a wicked radio show and a excellent and long running club night with Michael Reinboth, Theo Thönnessen and Florian Keller at the controls.
One more stop before Cuki departs for Vienna and home. Nice little shop called Optima (quite a big shop actually)and Cuki finding another copy of Theo Parrish's 'Walking thru the sky'(what a tune)in the process. Check out this store for some serious electronica and hip hop if you ever in the Munchen area. So finally time for Cuki to get his boots back to Vienna. We board the 'Max Reinhardt' which of course is a train! And have you ever seen those bullets on the DB train network. Straight outta Thunderbirds bro. Before we depart we have to give our thanks to Dirk and all in the Munich area. As always Cuki enjoying the company, the food, the ladies, the train journeys, the music.
So here ends another Cuki adventure.
Before we head off into Cuki chart bizniz we bring to you once again the attention of the one and only Tankus Green. Apart from being the funkiest person ever to visit planet Earth and the sunmaker to so many of our great days here on the small blue planet. She is a super loon out of all proportions. Check the further adventures of someone quite extraordinary at http://www.tankgreen.com New and improved and with added vits and mins, the website that lets you know that even snot has it's place on this earth. We luv ya boots Tank
We wish a belated b/day to Eva. Happy days ahead Eva
Time to go then, and just as I finish typing, the P_EACE man plays Stereotyp and a track called 'Un dos tres' on the 'One World' BBC Radio 1 show live from the Snowbombing thing in Switzerland. Which leads perfectly into the next part of this newsletter.
Dr Boots prescribes the following for your forthcoming aural pleasure.
*Nu Bitz to chart this week
*Stereotyp - Un Dos Tres/Silence (G Stone) 12"
A little story! Once upon a time at 'Bite your Granny' with the infamous Nik Weston. Playing back to back with Nippon Nik and Cuki's turn to put a tune on the deck. Coffee's classic 'Casanova' out of the box and out of Nippons mouth comes ''It's all over Jazzanova''. End of story and a bit of nu jazz folklore there for ya. Anyway, with this twelve, it really is all over Jazzanova. Two 'out of this universe' tracks and one being exclusive to the twelve. The Stereotyp is coming, I told you in a newsletter a year ago and those snowbombers just got a taste of the candy.
Stereotyp- My Sound (G-Stone) 3xLP
This a real true sound of creation, this a real true sound of revelation. So hear this! 18th district, 21st century, the protégé and time to blow the myth about Viennese music once and for all! ST comes with my personal favourite album of the year. And we know Cuki's judgement counts on this one! Yep, I've been waiting to chart this album for over a year and it might just stay here at the top of the tree for another one! Forget two step, we finally go Ragga step! This the lick and its bigger then big.
Peace Orchestra - Reset (G-Stone) CD-R
The P_EACE man sits proud! His protage has delivered! His remix pals have come through with the 'readies' too. Talking about chums like Jimbo, those tango boys from Paris, the Chateau Flight crew also from Paris, the legedary DJ DSL, the wine collector from Freiburg, the Fluid Ounce boys, Messer's Rutten, Meitz, Komsa to name but a few. All good at Casa K's then. Now you can start the next album Mr P_EACE man ;)
* Heal - Bubblin' (Original & Broke Tek mixes)(Key) CD-R
Watch this! I'm telling ya now! How ****ing monster is this! Two mixes killing me, both Jesus H Christ, both gonna blow up! The Simbad and the French Connection turning up the heat. Forget the bagels, the best thing in Brick lane is this lot. Yes, get your notepads out boys and girls and jot down the details. A consignment of nu jazz and tek funk about to hit the streets and believe me, there is a lot more where this came from. Bubblin' is red hot.
* Frankie Valentine - Intro Outro (Recloose & Volcov remixes)(Sunshine) CD-R
Hats off to Claus at Sunshine for commissioning these two excellent remixes for our boy Frankie. The original makes the cut but Matt's and Enrico's mixes steal the show. Recloose super consistent as ever and some will say his best remix so far. The Volcov in his 4-4-2 formation takes it to a new level too! His best and most spiritual remix for sure I reckon. Yes, this will be one very hot twelve each.
*Emo - Relief for free (Butti 49 remix)(Stereo Deluxe) 12"
Stavanger takes it to the next level for Scandinavia. Seriously guys, get ready! Scandinavia coming with the next chapter in all vibes musical. The book never ends, and these pages belong to Northern Europe? Expect this one remix alone to make my man Snorre the hottest remixer around. This is sick and I'm not sure if my neighbours are complaining about the levels of sound or Cuki jumping up and down like a loon! Koop, Swell, Ernesto, Espen, Plej, Quant, Jol, NuSpirit Helsinki, all that stuff on the Raw Fusion label? Scandinavia is red hot and they are only just beginning.
*Q-Burns Abstract Message - The Innocent (Scuba remix)(Eight Dimension) 12"
I spend so much of my life looking for house music that dares to differ. I need to look no further then that man King Britt. Lisa Shaw, Naked music vocalist and King takes her to new levels of deepness and spirituality. But then again King the king of extracting the very best from a Divas voice. Those who are still hunting the Michelle Shaprow, then this may go some way to quenching your appetite.
*Larrisa Kapp - You (Neglige) 12"
Deep, moody and definitely Detroit in feel. In fact, think King Britt and his Scuba guise moving to the Motor City and you may get the picture. House not house, twisted, fragile but all music. Excellent release forthcoming from Germany via Viennese distribution. Could be big if any of the big dicks play it.
*Bobby Hughes Combination - Kerma Elastica (Karin Krog re-vocal)(Stereo Deluxe) 12"
Check the flip! Oh my god! Oli and the Cuki losing it big time at ST club! If only we could get Gigi to dance! And where was Dr Boots with his medication in all this chaos! Well, I told ya about this track appearing on the next 'Coming Home' selection for Oli's Stereo Deluxe label. This though a Karin Krog re vocal on the 'B' and it is worth wetting yourself for. The track that every one has been bugging out for for so long. I first heard Lil Tony play this one night at the Kerma Club well over a year ago in Helsinki and maybe it really is dedicated to one of the best clubs in Europe.
*J Live - A Charmed Life (Instrumental)(Coup D'etat) 12"
Is it me or did all the music I pick up on my travels just happen to be of the highest quality. The best instrumental doing the rounds. Hip hop meets jazz! I guess we can all blame Madlib for that? It's spiritualityl lays in its simplicty. The beauty of model hip hop is here and it's pure class. Check the flip too for a melodica lead reggae instrumental. And these from the new school of hip hop. And when you have checked the twelve, go seek a wonderful new album from the crew too.
*V/A - Tribes Vol 7 (INFRACom) 3xLP
Mr Michael Rutten, one of my favourite DJ's and certainly one of the very best musical selectors around. The comp is called 'Soul Searching' and soul it finds with ease. As always with the Tribes selection a few undiscovered gems to go along with some of our favourite tracks of recent months. So do we really need another compilation? Yes we do when they are of this quality. Check dem kids from Gonkyberg, the Swell session meeting Ernesto for a slice of Andreas getting all sweaty and broken over Domu. Wicked exclusive. Was it really the first broken beat track out of Sweden?
* Johnny Conquest - Uptown for the Americas (Sirkus) CD-R
After a hard day cleaning ones boots, Cuki likes to sit down with his favourite china mug full of choice java juice and listen to something just a little bit different. And believe me this is different. Abstract electronica with body and soul. A bit of electric Miles, some full flavoured funk, snippets of David Sylvian and early Verve, it's all here. If you are going to be differnet then this is how to do it. Hats off to Rob and Ben at Sirkus for making Cuki's coffee taste better. Look out for Aim and Mr Hermano remix biz soon too.
*Nicole Conte - Jet Sounds Revisted (Schema) 2x 10"
Volume 1 and an excellent double pack ten inch remix project coming through. Espen Horne, Les Gammas, Freeform Arkestra, all deliver fine interpretations and we are definitely getting into spring. A quality second volume to follow too. Schema coming through yet again.
*Gerd - Amarelle (LEA) 12"
I love this outfit! Another excellent release out of Belgium and another great little bossa/nu jazz number. Gerd definitely getting deeper and more darker with the percussive stuff. The last twelve hit the mark too. Keep it up guys.
*? - The Moose track (Bobby Hughes Combo remix)(?) 12"
OK Cuki gonna have a bit of fun here! This is hot but I can't unfortunately tell you who it is. Some bloke on the organ got the hump and it's not gonna be official. Only a few hundred pressed so seek. Is it a sheep or is it a mousse? Who cares, all we know is that it is hot. Some label with a top notch geezer at the controls and some wicked releases in the pipeline. I reckon Gigi would dance to this if only I could lift her from her Cherry juice
*Jazzanova - That night (Wahoo remix)(Recreation) 12"
Well, there's a deluge of remix pressure soon come for those Berliners but Dixon quick off the mark in getting his own excellent remix on the next instalment of 'Off Limits'. Our favourte mix here in Wien and nice to have on a juicy twelve.
*Tom & Joyce - Album (Yellow) CD-R
Yes the Brazilian thing is here just in time for the world cup. Authentic samba ryhtmns via Paris and finally T&J come of age. This album could really give Bebel a ride for her money. Simple, sweet and very effective for chatting up Japanese girles Nik. You must be on this bro
*Blaktroniks - Fais moi fremir (Domu remix)(Moving On) 12"
Domu the king of linking up the vocals with the broken up thing. Hope this is not a hard to find twelve for ya. It deserves to break through into all the shops and charts. The Bradford bomber as always coming through with beats sharp, precise and clear. I don't think Domu has ever made a duff track! Get it out there Groove Attack!
*A Bossa Eletrica - Tomba in 7/4 (Raw Fusion) 12"
New label on the scene from the main man in Stockholm DJ Mad Mats. This first release a 'all about town' bossa bonanza. Versions of 'Tomba in 7/4', 'Maria da mercedes' and 'Vera Cruz' light the fuse nicely. Strong interpretations and all on the live tip too. 6 of them front the band.
*Stockholm Cycle - Tree Shaker (Raw Fusion) 12"
More frantic moves from Sweden. Electronic dance music it is and Detroit textures with a slices of broken beat almost blossoming through. Raw Fusion is an apt name for label that will promote this kind of music. The guys have found a good home here.
* V/A - Rewind (Ubiquity) CD-R
To drawer selection of cover versions. All over the place too. Epic versions of Golden Brown, Heaven must be like this, Daylight, and a 'out there' reggae version of Billie Jean by the Shinehead of which Mr Jervis is very proud. Check the cover cause it really does look like Pete from BBE. If it is, then you need glasses bro!
Seiji feat Lyric L - Loose Lips (Bitasweet) 12"
2.30 in the am, Zagreb, Croatia, Dr Boots dropping west London musical bombs and dem hi hats are being throw all over the Kontrapunkt joint. This enough for Eddy Ramich! ''What the f**k is this'' he screams at the good Dr Boots. Yeah, loose lips may sink ships and tings but this is the big one outta Bitasweet. Mad applause cause its Bugz in the attic of course.
Recloose - Cardiology (K7)
Matt Chicoine aka the Recloose, this the album and this what all the headz been waiting for! So is it any good? Err, no, its not good, it's blinding. But you weren't really surprised was you. This man has a sound, he has the imagination, he has the goods full stop. Expect a deluge of up and coming artists to sound like this man in years to come. Recloose though will always be the leader. Cardiology will be one of the best albums you'll buy this year.
Kaidi Tatham - Feed the Cat (BB Boogie remix)(Laws of Motion) CD-R
Anthem in a certain BMW in Vienna! Yes the P_EACE man goes home the long way when this is playing on his 'in car' entertainment system. You'll need extra springs in the seats too if you follow suit. The Boogie have the bounce and this a perfect remix for Kaidi's next single. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say we want a BB album! You on it Mr I-Kue.
Obe Funke - Bush workout (Karma Giraffe) 12"
Monumental workout it is too. Epic journey through the heart of Africa via Philadelphia. King Britt involved somewhere in this journey and that should be enough to pencil in the details. Seek cheap airline tickets for Japan, cause that's the only deck on the ship who will get this. Others have to wait for the Obe Funke album to experience the workout. Yep the hype starts now.
Shanti Roots & Scheibosan - Afrique/Believe (Vienna Scientists) 12"
Flex anthem alert. Two killa tracks that start off on the phat and chunky trail and travel to divine holiness. Two tracks that really do take you higher. Yes, in Vienna there is a spirituality in the music too! This spirituality is complimented with the biggest bass found in the cellar. I got a gig coming up at the Flex and there will be four DJ's fighting to play this track. Be on it and respect to the Scheibo and thanks for my third copy Niklas. UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE, Er Niklas I actually need a fourth. Mr Jervis ran away to San Fran with the last one!
Defcon 5 and Blue - Goodbye/Welcome (Moving records) 7"
Blue is the colour baby! Short, sweet and sexy little seven inch that is sure to blow up if we can get copies over to GP and the Forgemaster. Blue is the lyricist and if she looks like she sounds that she is drop dead gorgeous. Beats supplied by Defcon 5 are of the twisted jazz hip hop style and perfectly compliment Blues sweet and sexy tones. Those who enjoyed the Sarah Jones/DJ Vadim excursion with the 'Revolution, be on the lookout. UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE! The 'Goodbye' track will be appearing on the next 'Tribes' compilation by top soul daddy Michael Rutten soon come on INFRACom.
Seelenluft - Out of the woods (Klein) CD-R
My six track sampler just turned into a full blown album! Next level of eccentric mood making and sonic soundscaping getting ready to be released at the end of April. Even those who enjoyed the excellent Synchronschwimmer EP last year in for a shock and a treat. Typical late night listening here at 'Bootsville'. Who needs dreams!
High Contrast - Return of Forever (Landslide remix)(Hospital) CD-R
Another quality rework from Tim Land, this one though a slight detour from those spacey Rhodes sample he uses so well. Still Landslide in every other respect. The bass and the beats jump around in all the right order, the flow and rhythm of the track always in conjunction with everything else going on. Two step soul, UK garage for grown ups. Another essential Hospital purchase soon come. Respect to the Red Door
The Bug feat Tikiman - Live & Learn (Klein) 12"
Those adventurous boys at the 'small' office on the ball with this one. But then again, Klein the most fearless label I know and that's why I love them. Something called the Bug with that man Tikiman doing the do. Told ya, it's about future Raggastepping bro.
Focus - Find myself/Spaceship Rocket (Versatile) 12'
Focus aka Phil Asher aka Phlash aka west London Don Dadda. A sample from the forthcoming and long awaited album for Gilb-r and co. Phil another who can twist and turn like a ballerina on acid. One excellent house mutha which cries out to be played in a club and another excursion in the form of a ragga come reggae groove that had Sugar B asking for a copy. If this is a sample of the album then we are in for a treat.
Jimpster - Domestic Science (Kudus) CD-R
Another complete album from Jamie. The man with the groove in his bones and talent all the way from his shoe laces to his big generous smile. Yeah he really is nicest guy and his music is the bomb. Another CD that keeps on getting stuck in the player here at 'Bootsville'. And with all Jimpster productions, diversity in abundance. Songs, grooves, everything you need in album. If music really is a journey and Jamie's music is one in the first class seat. Excellent stuff.
Uschi Classen - Soul Magic (Earth Project) CD-R
Uschi pushes the envelope even further. 10 top selections from the forthcoming album and reinforcing the super consistent Earth Project imprint. Past favs like 'Home', 'Now Illuminate are included too. Eska and Robert Owens list as featured singers. Future soul, funk, jazz a plenty.
Quant - Funkster EP (Hollow) 12"
New Hollow single with Joans Quant this time at the controls. Expect super richness and many textures in the keyboard work out as ever from Jonas. Add some soulful beats and a hint of that Gonkyburg bass and you get a recipe for another monster groove from Sweden.
Zero 7 - Distractions (Bugz in the Attic remix)(Ultimate Dilemma) 12" & CD-R
Who's bigger? Zero 7 or Bugz in the Attic? Round our way, its the Bugz! West London musical hooligans deliver a distinctive north Acton rub for the next Z7 single. Check for the minimal and darker dubbier second mix if you can find a secret CD-R supplier with it.
Gotan Project - Triptico (Peter Kruder 'Trip De Luxe' remix) 12"
This back in Fall! Secret rendezvous at the Wirr! Dr Boots undercover bizniz with his big mac on. Man dressed in black walks in with a package. Dr Boots unnoticed, slips this package into his raincoat. Thankfully the raincoat is heat resident cause this package is hot. So hot, he needed oven gloves to put it into the CD player when he got home. Aiight, the best dance record of the new century gets the Viennese treatment. And oh my god, what a treatment it is. P_EACE ,man delivers what Dr Boots thinks is his finest and most respectful remix ever. A tough job to remix the Triptico track. Its just so f**king awesome as it is. But Mr Kruder comes through with flags, horns, bells, flying colours and a big smile on Cuki's face!
Jazzanova - In Between (JCR/Compost) CD-R
Well, if you need oven gloves for the 'Trip De luxe' mix then you need full asbestos lining to protect you from the heat with this 13 tracker. Jazznaova come through with the first of what we hope will be many long players. 'In Between' is everything Jazzonva promised to be. All the other tracks they did before, all the remixes! They were just the paving the way for this baby. And you know how good the tracks before were! Hold your horses for late April release, because thats when it arrives.
Rima - Try to Understand (Papa) 12"
Pressure mix the one for me. Another worthy outing for the Rima crew and Papa just going from strength to strength. Already at number 9 and no signs of holding back. Expect all the west London boys to be playing this. Check the excellent Everyday People twelve too featuring Marcus Begg.
Atjazz - Lab Results (Mantis) CD-R
A selection of remixes from the excellent Lab Funk album with some new remixes and new tracks to boot. The ever consistent Atjazz and Mantis records never letting go of the groove. This may not see light of day as a vinyl album but you can bet your last Euro/Penny/Cent that there will be some tasty twelve's in the stores in months to come
Sun Ra - The Satellites are spinning (Zero dB mix)(Mo Smog) CD-R
6 in the am. Flex regulars leaving the very first party of December 01. But wait, the P_EACE man has one more tune to drop. In the back ground crashing drums and horns introduce an exclusive. Someone too is calling planet Earth. Could that really be June Tyson? Er, it's at this time that we totally lose control of our boots! Neil and Chris watch on in amusement. So here it is, the maddest, the craziest remix of the year already. Zero dB excel themselves with this, their most outrageous remix. Some how and in some place far from this planet, the Ra is dancing his cosmic boots to the Z dB! Respect to the Ra, respect to the dB.
Sun Ra - Sunset on the Nile (Eddy & Dus remix)(Mo Smog) CD-R
Think the boys from Zagreb must have been pushing a supermarket trolley with a wonky wheel when they conceived this remix. It really does go all over the place. Sun Ra gets to go all broken beat. Right now, Eddy & Dus are two of the most exciting producers around and this adventurous remix shows how fearless they are with it. Two Sun Ra tracks in Cuki's chart. Maybe we should give Saturn a call and get him over for a gig?
V/A - Music & Movement (Climate) 2xCD & 2x12"
And about time someone gave Nik Weston a proper musical journey to compile. One of my favourite musical selectors gives us his vision on all things latin, broken, phuture and nu. 21 track CD with a few top exclusives to keep the headz happy. A 8 track vinyl sampler is keeping the junkies happy too. You'll be pleased to hear that there are 5 tracks from the land of the rising sun. Only 5? Hats off to my bro and his pipe.
This weeks Java Joint.
I can't be asked man! It's some little hour in the morning and probably no one ever reads this part of the newsletter anyway. If anyone out there is reading it and wants to know about a choice jazz album then maybe next week bro. Forgive my boots for I have sinned! Blame Oli and Treacle for my lack of energy and flu!
