Hey aj list. Nice to see that since I stopped posting my rite-wing political messages, the void has been neatly filled by viruses.
I notice aj list member Temi's name all over the spring 2002 straight no chaser. Temi is the hippest cat of all and once sent me a record just because he heard me talk about it on the aj list and found it in a store. Nicer than nice. props to Temi.... (and Temi was right, btw, it didn't sound as nice as i remember...)
Saw stanton moore and friends at House of Blues 2 weeks ago, with guitar, 2 (2?) baritone saxes, and Chris Wood of MMW on bass. Now, I think there should be a law stating that no gigs shall permit more than one bass solo per nite. Chris Wood did 3 in the first 2 songs!
Still, it was pretty funky for the frat crowd set; the audience was 99.95% white male... (i did see 2 girls, but they were up against the far wall talking to each other...). Stanton Moore bears a bit of a resemblance to a grungier Max Weinberg; he's kind of got that nerdy stance behind the kit. But his funk is all muddy and sick... so i liked it.
BTW MMW will be at the Wiltern tonite WITH a horn section. I don't like those guys when they go into those 45 minute extended grateful dead wankified jamz. I'm thinking with the horns it might be more structured, and maybe i'll check it out...
Next, went over to see Rainer Truby (sans trio) at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Maybe I'm just too old but I am not feeling the Compost thing at all. Sorry, I try. Even the new Jazzanova tracks I've heard, with a few exceptions, are not doing it for me.
The whole thing sounds like, well, like if you saw this really hot but somehow oddly repetitive latin percussionist, and you went up and realized he was wearing one of those mission:impossible masks and he was really one of the bespectacled dudes from kraftwerk!
So, I personally like the new Kamal the Abstract trax I've heard much more, even though they might be a bit uneven.
On that tip, i've been enjoying Thursdays at the Rootdown, which has been around for a long long while and is still generally standing room only. it is crowded and SWEATY up in there. good thing they're burning incense all the time. dj Babu was there last nite, and played what i believe was a new beat junkies track f. jurassic 5. watch out for it 'cuz it's tight... the opening line was something like "i don't resent it if I say fuck the president...."
hey, whatup with that?!? ah well, i just pretended they were talking about clinton or jimmy carter and swayed to the funk, cuz it was poppin!
LA is a great place with great musicians everywhere all the time! (and lots of wierdos too, so i fit in well). it's a great place to get your straight ahead on, what with Geri Allen, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Garrett, Airto and Flora Purim and the like making appearences regularly. (how much to park? 10 dollars, are you joking?)
and can't these grafitti guys get trained or get a license first?... some of them are not very artistic, imho...
peaceout for now...
