STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
Firstly, sorry to everyone who's emailed me in the last week that I haven't
responded to. I'm getting through them slowly. Kano and I have just returned
from a visit to Brisbane and Byron Bay, soaking up some sunshine,
rollercoasters and good grooves. The Brisbane gig was a 10 year reunion for
Sunny Side Up, a party that I played live at back in 92 when I was producing
hip hop crew Acapulco Gold. Good to see familiar faces there and that the
night was still as rocking as ever, thanks to main selectors Ravi and Will.
Ravi is going to get a monthly night going called Caravan which should
continue the vibe. The crowd at La La Land in Bryon were also equally up for
whatever style we threw at them, whether soul, latin bugalu, jazz, hip hop
or drum and bass (the English backpackers seemed to especially appreciate
this). It would be great to have La La's open air atmosphere down here, but
methinks rain would interrupt play far too often.
Hmmm, I haven't been doing so well with Stylin guests lately. Unfortunately
Angela Maison and Mako couldn't make it in person last week, but luckily I
had some of Angela's Little Beasties music (with Ant J Steep) on hand to
satisfy the demanding public. A great tune is Beastie Bump in funky quirky
twisted house mode. And that's only the demo dub version!
We also featured a killer new track from former Stylin guest Plutonic Lab,
featuring the rugged raggified vocals of RuCL (who's going to become a more
regular MC at Open Sesame). This previously unreleased tune is going to be
on the Other-Worldly Fusions compilation I have done with Kano, out in about
a month thru Hardware. The Melbourne tracks from Plutonic Lab & RuCL and the
Bamboos stand up very well against the world's best including Gotan Project,
Volker Meitz, Hajime Yoshizawa, Russ Gabriel and Wagon Cookin.
In Trainspotters' Corner, we had a Les Gammas track which was slated for
release on Compost a little while back, but got held up because of licensing
difficulties. The possibility that it may never get a proper release gives a
new meaning to the title "Now I'll Sleep". The incredible vocal is by the
legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater, originally recorded in for Strata East in
1974 with Charles Sullivan and Stanley Cowell. It was a productive year for
Dee Dee, in which she also recorded her own Afro Blue LP for Japanese label
Trio, and participated in Frank Foster's Loud Minority album. It's her
calling "we are a part of the loud minority" as sampled by UFO and DJ
Shadow, but the tune for me is the gorgeous ballad "EW Beautiful People".
Tune in tomorrow for my chat with future soul diva Nicole Willis, ahead of
her performance at Revolver on Saturday.
until then
Ennio Styles
