The first thing that comes to mind for me is "Ella Fitzgerald: Live in
Berlin"
The smokin' "Too Darn Hot" to the wicked change up and scatting of "Fly Me
to the Moon" and, of course my personal, greatest musical moment of all
time.
What is that you ask? Ella breaks into the then newly composed "Mack the
Knife" by Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong, and after the first chorus
forgets the words entirely. Needless to say, she turns this to her
advantage, swinging the song like its never swung before or since.
Speaking of live performances, DJ that is, I saw Ursula 1000 + Nicola Conte
at the Smartbar on Saturday night. Mr. Ursula was solid, dropping his
signature brand of disco kizch breakbeat with expert technical presicion.
This was, however in distinct contrast to Conte's complete lack of mixing
skills. His track selection was great, but the constant train wrecks were
embarrasing. I just don't understand why dj's in this situation don't just
quick cut their records, it sounds such much better.
