    Matthew K DJ Chart 29th April 2002

    1. Stereotyp: My Sound (G Stone)
Cheers to Cukipapa for sending me this. After the delights of his 12's,
Stereotyp drops 11 tracks of major dubby buisness. Loads of vocals,
drum'n'bass influences, 2 step sounds and a stunning production job results
    in a killer album.

    2. The Herbaliser: Something Wicked (Ninja Tunes)
One of the highlights from the recent album, this is a brilliant choice of
single with its jazzy flavours and almost operatic vocals. However its the
Agent K (aka Kaidi Tatham) remix of 'Mr Holmes' thats the real gem with an
old school funk flavoured killer that shows another side to Tatham's genius.

    3. Cinematic Orchestra: Everyday (Ninja Tunes)
What a year it is turning out for albums with Koop, Jazzanova, Verve
Remixed, Joseph Malik and this utter delight. Possibly even better than
their first album, this shows the Cinematic Orchestra paving the way forward
    for modern jazz. AWESOME.

    4. Jazzanova: In Between (JCR / Compost)
Truly glorious and worth the wait. Jazzanova have moved on to give us an
album with jazz and soul gems with a variety of guests. This is what all
future music will sound like one day. You need this.

    5. Recloose: Ain't Changin' (K7)
A sampler from his forthcoming album on K7, with a kind of old school feel
with a broken beat influence. Also has an outrageous Carl Craig mix on the
    flip.

    6. Quant: Funkster EP (Hollow)
Watch out for this guy. Formally signed to the now defunct Dot label, anyone
who got hold of the (now extremely rare) 'Quantastical Quantasm' album will
realise what a talent he is. Here we get 3 new tracks in the Herbie Hancock
    vein. Splendid.

    7. Seiji: Loose Lips (Bitasweet)
The Goya crew continue with the gems, with this Bugz in The Attic production
bringing the vocal talents of Lyric L to the fore. One of the most original
    things in a while.

    8. Sun Ra: Sunset On The Night Of The River Nile - Eddie & Dus Remix (Mo
    Smog)
Been looking out for this for a while, so cheers to Paolo at Mo Smog for
sorting me out. Broken beats, manic percussion and the genius of Sun Ra all
together. Its quite scary how well Sun Ra sounds in this modern context.
    Excellent.

    9. Neon Phusion: Its Another EP (Laws Of Motion)
Bugz in the Attic are on a roll and the moment and here is another gem in
their catalogue with 3 excellent tracks. Their music is just getting better
    and better.

    10. Seelenluft: Manila (Klein)
A remix 12" from the crew who brought us the delightful 'Syncronschwimmer
EP' last year. Highly unusual, it features a 2 step mix from Leaf's Manitoba
and some dubby post disco buisness from Headman as well as the delightful
    jazzy original.

    11. Scuba feat Alma Horton: Give It All (Archive)
Really late with this one, but did I have trouble tracking it down. No
surprise really as this is King Britt at his best with broken beats, dreamy
synths and the vocals of Alma Horton, as well as a Domu mix.

    12. Joseph Malik: Diverse (Compost)
Local lad drops a stunning long player for the genius Compost label. Reminds
of Terry Callier and Shuggie Otis, it shows that real songs and soul music
are back, but with modern production skills.

    13. Dr Rubberfunk: Step On It (GPS)
Some proper double bass led dancefloor jazz from this new outfit. Check the
Lalo Schifrin style breakbeat killer on the flip.

    14. John Beltram: Americano (Exceptional)
One of the most talented men in electronic music is back with his 4th album,
and shows him moving into even more jazzier territories. This is an
    astounding album.

    15. Various: Music & Movement Vol 1 (Climate)
Double CD of utterly stunning music, with countless Japanese nuggets finally
getting a release over here. Compiled by Nik Weston, this is the perfect
indicator of where music is just now. With an 8 track vinyl sampler with
most of the highlights included, this is comiplation of the year so far.

    16. Bugge Wesseltoft: Change - Chillumanti Mix (Jazzland)
Promo only 12" with a fab remix which retains all the elements of the
original, but works in building up funkier drum patterns.

    17. Rhianna: Oh Baby - Remixes (Sony)
What a find! A new signing but has the mighty talents of 4 Hero on one side
and Dodge aka Venus Tribe on the other, both coming up with wicked remixes.
    Love this.

    18. Modaji: Pre-Sets Sampler (Laws of Motion)
4 track sampler from the forthcoming compilation. Every track here is genius
and in the box for a VERY long time.

    19. King Britt Presents Obafunke: Bush Workout (Karma Giraffe)
Yet more proof that King Britt is a fully fledged genius. Collaborating with
African musician Obafunke, the result is a 15 minute voodoo groove.

    20. Rednose Distrikt: Nana (Hum Hum)
Coming through Rushour this slow motion house track features some awesome
Rhodes action resulting in one of the funkiest tracks in ages.

    21. Org: Organic Language (Revirth)
This has probably been floating about for a while but those Japanese 12's
are so hard to track down, I've only just discovered it. Immense production
with broken beats, double bass AND a Calm mix on the flip. AWESOME.

    22. Bluprint: Mathis & Tetchener (Exceptional)
These guys are a major talent and this shows how the live musician can
always surprise where samples sometime fail. Watch out for the album due
soon, it will be a gem.

    23. Ayro: Drink / Let This (Omoa)
Second release from this exciting new Detroit label. Watch out Jazzanova,
these guys are serious contendors with their broken beat productions.

    24. Mutant Soul Records: Jaam Blue Series 3 (Mutant Soul)
Two amazing dancefloor friendly remixes from the Jimpster here. This is
turning out to be a wicked label.

    25. Ras: Rhythmic Altered State (Best Seven)
Forthcoming on this Sonar Kollktiv offshoot, this CDr shows yet another
genius talent from the Jazzanova family.

    26. Plej: Sampler CD 2000 (CDr)
These guys are going to be massive. Following the release of their mega rare
debut 12" (does anyone actually own a copy) they follow it up with a taster
of their future releases. These guys need to be signed.

    27. Greg Long: Balance (Shadow)
Hailing from the other side of the pond, this is a lovely downtempo album.
Letting the melodies and music tell the story, this is one for the chill out
    sets. Nice.

    28. Jack Costanzo: Calypso Blue - As One Mix (Ubiquity)
Take one classic jazz tune written by Nat King Cole, cover it extremely well
and get Kirk Degiorgio to remix it. Result - what do you think?

    29. Suba: Tributo (Crammed)
A very worthy tribute to the late Suba, with a collection of collaborations,
remixes and new tracks featuring the likes of Boyz from Brazil, Buscemi and
    the Funky Lowlives among others.

    30. DJ Marky: LK (V Recordings)
2 seperate 12's, both excellent showing that the Brazilian drum'n'bass sound
is going from strength to strength. I'm going for the instrumental mix of
    'LK'.

    31. Troublemakers: Too Old To Die (Guidance)
With a fantastic breakbeat led dancefloor friendly remix from Geisha as well
as 2 chilled beauties on the flip, this is a winner.

    32. Kaos: The Renegades EP (Compost)
The greatest label in the world continue to astound with a gorgeous
    downtempo 4 track EP.

    33. Nina Simone: See Line Woman - MAW Mix (Verve)
First vinyl release of track from forthcoming Verve remix album. Masters at
Work do their finest on this Nina Simone classic.

    34. Suv: Do You Remember (Full Cycle)
Drum' n 'bass is back and its releases like this that are the reason why.
Brilliant latin instrumentation fused with outrageous beats to devastating
    effect.

    35. Various: Verve Remixed (Verve)
Still floating about on CDr with the vinyl release put back. Potentially the
best remix album this year with an astounding array of talent. Virtually
every track a winner, including Joe Claussell, MJ Cole and King Britt.

    36. Jazzanova: Days To Come - Ian O'Brien Mix (CDr)
Mr. O'Brien has now moved to Glasgow, and this is a forthcoming remix from
    the much hailed Jazzanova album.

    37. Nu Spirit Helsinki: Album Promo (CDr)
Only 100 in circulation and forthcoming on Guidance, this is already going
to be one of the years best albums and we are only in January. Watch out for
    it.
