I agree with you Elson, for the most part. However, if hip-hop has taught us anything, it is that there are always different ways the same sample can be "flipped" creatively to a different effect. It depends on how it is done though. and i agree that ashanti's career is exactly not what i am talking about. as far as a good example, i don't know, maybe musiq's "caught up" (re-using bohannon) or the aiires's (sp?) single. and i must say that groove theory's "tell me" (24 k hip-hop remix), which reuses the edie brickell/brand nubian beat, is one of most satisfying finds in recent months.

on a related pop note, i must give the sheepish thumbs up to justin timberlake's LP - or at least the half of it produced by the neptunes. rock your body, right for me and the single are particularly doing it for me (and gilles peterson i might add). if you can get past the sophmoric lyrics, which i have no problem doing, then i think you'll enjoy this.

and i must also voice my pleasure with the new Roots LP. This is what i have been waiting for these boys to make since their 2nd album dropped. they say in a great GQ article, that they tried to make songs in all the styles they've never tried before (they had been locked in a pretty stagnant, if best in class, 92bpm jazzy rhodes vibe for too long). this one has rock, spoken word, latin tinges, faster, slower, etc..

and on the back of that statement, i must also say that the cody chesnutt 2CD is finally being distributed (through groovedis). it is well worth a listen, despite the filler and problems that are inevitable on any 2cd demo quality recording. but if you haven't heard the revolutionary dub-hop of "serve this royalty," or lush "can't get no better," you've missed some prime american black music.

    matt
