Ridu,
because you belong to the lists you do it is obvious to me that you are a
serious music lover and that is the top wash as far as I am concerned, that
you happen to adore vinyl as a medium is just a personal thing and I
understand that although I only occasionally have vinyl in my mixes, but I
do understand that there are those of us who happen to be serious vinyl
aficionados and I respect folks for that! My quibble with your statements is
really about the qualitative side of things, you seemed to suggest that
vinyl DJ's are better by definition and I have a big argument with that
notion, a real big one but I realize that you are not trying to offend,
rather taking the side of the media of your choice. I would venture to say
that ulitmately it matters not a jot if you are a good DJ just what medium
you are using to weave your web. Once I get things moving on the dance floor
or on the air I would defy anyone to really tell the difference, when the
dancers go off and the segues settle into the real groove I doubt that 99%
of people would realy be able to tell what I was spinning but what is more
important to me is that I don't think they really care at all, truly dude,
it is only us deep music and dj-heads who give a real shit about that sort
of stuff because we are just so into it! I am unable to scratch with my
Numark CD players although I have witnessed people doing remarkable things
with CD players, and I vote with you in that there are some things you can
do with vinyl that are not possible with CD's, what the qualitative element
in this really means I am unable to say! Every now and then I feel like I
should have the scratching thing down and at my fingertips but then I see
people going off and having a really good time and I realize all over again
that it just does not matter, if you got it going on then the medium is not
the message, its just the medium! I have learned that there are certainly
things that make a difference to one's performance as a DJ but those things
have nada to do with the medium, they have to do with your feel, intuition,
rhythmic feel, selection, presence and the energy you put out into what you
are doing, not whether you are spinning vinyl or not. I admire people who
are really down with their stylistic stuff and who are devoted to their own
trip but those things do not make them good DJ's, just serious devotees!
