Ok, for fear of being shot down in flames.....This is only *my*
opinion...take it or leave it.
For me this has to have been this years most long awaited album and
simply put, I was disappointed.
Before it's release, you could only get Vikter Duplaix vocalising on
other peoples tracks, mixing on his own DJ Kicks release - which in my
opinion has set a different standard for mix comps and has his track
"Sensuality", and then on the single releases of "Manhood" and "Looking
For Love". These single releases were packed with tight remixes from the
likes or City Spirits, King Britt and Bugz in the Attic - all awesome.
So when I heard the album it smacked of an artist forced/rushing into
making an album having not fully established *his* own stance musically
or not being able to execute it as well as others. The guy has an
amazing voice and style, granted, but other than the tracks - "I Got
You", "Morning Fun" and "What We Want", the rest sound slightly too R&B
- and "Yesterday's Pain", with it's rocky guitars, or "Tropical Girl",
using what sounds like a pre-selected program from a cheap Casio
keyboard - are just awful.
My advice would be stick to the single releases because the
remixes/reworks are usually outstanding and if you don't own his DJ
Kicks release - you should - you will learn something about track
selection. (Although admittedly the Microsoft Sam vocal snippets
throughout it get a bit tiresome.)
I'm in no doubt there will be lots more outstanding releases from Vikter
Duplaix, but his album International Affairs V1.0 just doesn't hit the
mark.
