I absolutely agree with everything you said. I personally don't think
High Contrast is commercial, but it's just that I read a couple of
reviews that talked specifically about it being perceived as
commercial. The articles proposed it could possibly have the backlash
of perceived "commercialness" (is that a word?) with the purists like
Adam F's d'nb record, Colours (one of my top 10 d'nb albums, btw),
and more damagingly Alex Reese's "pulp fiction," due to its
accessibility to more than just the core d'nb crowd.

This is a great conversation that has been discussed in the past on
this list. In particular, your comment about "something being made
with an eye to being commercial vs. the public catching on" is a very
valid argument, one that I actually use a lot.

I have great respect for the high contrast record, I'd put it in my
top 10 for the year. I might as well list mine, while I'm on the
    subject:

My top 10 albums for the year in no particular order:
(i'm leaving out compilations or remix albums, that's a whole other animal)

    1. High Contrast - True Colors
    2. Stereotyp - My sound
    3. Peven Everett - Speed of light
    4. Tweet - Southern Hummingbird
(the singles were highly misleading for the rest of the album)
    5. Common - Electric Circus
    6. Nuspirit Helsinki - Nuspirit Helsinki
    7. Recloose - Cardiology
    8. Akufen - My way
    9. Lewis Taylor - Lewis II
    10.

    I also have to mention:
    Chocolate Genius' Godmusic,
    Brand New Immortal's self-titled,
    Bilal's 1st Born Second,
    Wagon Christ's Musipal,
N'Dambi's Tunin' Up and Cosignin' and
    Domu's Up + Down,
    all 2001 releases,
but I played them to death still this year

For the top 10 compilation/remix albums:

    1. Verve Remixed
    2. Music and Movement Vol. 1 compiled by Nik Weston
    3. chateau flight - remixent
    4. moshi moshi compilation
    5. secondhand sounds - herbert
    6.
    7. peace orchestra - reset
    8. hidden treasures - king britt
    9. scattered snares volume one
    10. welcome to the house, vol 1 - doggy style allstars

Now, the kicker would be top 10 songs for the year.
There were soooooooo many great songs this year.
I'll leave out remixes here as well,
as well as any songs from my top 10 albums.

    1. l.o.v.e and you and I - Jazzanova
    2. Sensuality - Vikter Duplaix
    3. Six Days - DJ Shadow
    4. Elevation featuring Donnie - DJ Cam
    5. Brown Sugar - Mos Def
    6. Beyond - Mr. Scruff
    7. The Proxy - RJD2
    8. Apricot Morning - Quantic
    9. Like this Anna - J-Live
    10. Jazz Pour Dadine - Nicola Conte

I'd like to see other listees lists.
